the last part is a good point

People will tend to watch more rather than gather in large crowd or event.

This might actually be the best time for BWF to penetrate the broadcast issue that has plagued them for a long time
Marketing has to be done better and someone intrigues people to at least watch badminton.

They can even make a special promotion now on youtube, by replaying large and very exciting match on fixed time every day/week.
The detail should be done by the marketing team. Hope they can use the opportunity wisely

A serious economic devastation, could be equated with Great Depression.

Will HSBC renew the contract after 2021? Hard to predict.
BWF might axe number of tournaments, the rebranded World Tour that consists of 33 events are too much.

the typical wt 500/750/1000 tournaments won't be the same. there will be restrictions on spectator size, so how would a host/organizer be able to afford hosting if they have no revenue stream from ticket & concession sales to offset their long lists of expenses? bwf is going to have to seriously restructure who pays for what for a tournament. getting back to 'normal' is 100% tied to a vaccine.

the usa is looking at 2022 as a possible return to 'normal' for concert/sporting/public events. it's going to feel like a lifetime from now...

Maybe the tournament format would return to Superseries era, only 12 top tier events in one-year BWF calendar?
I guess it'll be same for ohers, needs long long time to be fully recovered.

I think this is the most feasible, having only 15 SS tourneys
Even though with the side effect that the GPs are not sponsored as much as the SS
BWF have to work hard to find different sponsor for each level

I always think why not charge even if you dont want to charge pay per view or pay per Final, you can always sets a subscription monthly model for BWF (Include WTF WC & GrandPrixGold) as well other than SS. or if not just SS.

    • how much would you be willing to pay for a monthly subscription?
    • how much would you be willing to pay for qtr finals at each level?
    • how much would you be willing to pay for semi-finals at each level?
    • how much would you be willing to pay for finals at each level?
    • how much would you be willing to pay for any package you can think of at each level?
you can't spit out an idea without details or a solution.

BWF official announcement about US Open 2020 : https://bwfworldtour.bwfbadminton.com/news-single/2020/04/28/yonex-us-open-2020-suspended-2020/

    YONEX US Open 2020 Suspended
    Tuesday, April 28, 2020
    TEXT BY BWF STAFF

The Badminton World Federation (BWF) can confirm the suspension of the YONEX US Open 2020 set to be held 23-28 June in Fullerton, California.

This decision was made in close consultation and consensus with USA Badminton.

BWF accepts that all relevant health, safety and logistical risks have been considered by tournament organisers.

The tournament is a Super 300 event on the HSBC BWF World Tour.

Our thoughts remain with everyone affected by this global pandemic and we encourage people to stay home and stay safe.

    _________

    *Suspended means cancellation or rescheduled?

BAM want Malaysian Open in end November
    Thursday, 30 Apr 2020
    https://www.thestar.com.my/sport/badminton/2020/04/30/bam-want-malaysian-open-in-end-november

PETALING JAYA: The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) have a new date lined up for the postponed Celcom Axiata Malaysian Open. The national body want to hold the US$750,000 (RM3.27mil) event at the Axiata Arena in Bukit Jalil from Nov 24-29.The tournament’s 63rd edition, initially slated for March 31-April 5, was one of the dozens of events suspended since mid-March due to the Covid-19 outbreak.

The Badminton World Federation (BWF) World Tour and other sanctioned tournaments are all on hold until July, but it remains unknown to when play can restart.

    ======================================

“We have proposed (to BWF) for the Malaysian Open to be held some time end of November and we are waiting for them to get back to us, ” said BAM secretary Datuk Kenny Goh.

“The sooner it is, the better because everything is so unpredictable at the moment.

“We are also not sure about the changes that BWF are going to make to the Olympic qualification criteria.

“We are also waiting to find out about government’s directive on mass gathering after the movement control order (MCO) as it would have an impact on the tournament organisation.

“If we have the new dates secured, then we will have one less uncertainty to worry about.”

If granted, the Malaysian Open will most likely clash with another World Tour leg, the Korean Masters in the same week.

    =============================================
*Another top-tier BWF tours are seeking new dates too, INA Open (S1000) and IND Open (S500), the latter proposes December 2020 or January 2021 schedule. Just wondering whether World Tour Finals will happen this year, not many tournaments to count in Race of Guangzhou.

I believe the reopening of football Bundesliga in Germany will serve as a model to other sporting events. As with other tournaments with international circuits.. I think as long as the bigger budgeted sports (for example Tennis) didn't have an action plan... Badminton tournaments will be pushed and pushed back until there are Vaccines...

    TEXT BY BWF STAFF
    https://bwfworldtour.bwfbadminton.c...ounces-revamped-tournament-calendar-for-2020/

The Badminton World Federation (BWF) has announced a revamped tournament calendar for the remainder of 2020 following disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

How come BWF comes up with such a stupidity?.
22 tournaments in 5 months without even a single week gap in between.
    Blunder from their end.

May be BWF is expecting players to choose to play a cluster of 3-4 tournaments in a row then take some rest for a week or two before playing another cluster of 3-4 tournaments.

I wouldn't even pay any attention to the tour this year. Everything is just a mess
Decision to have too many tournaments backfires since now nobody really understands which tournament is important

I will only pay attention to TUC this year

    1. the issue is higher risk exposure from constant travel between each tourney. nevermind the zero spectator factor.
    2. what if you are subject to quarantine when you arrive? that means you can only prepare for the 1st tourney you play by going early, if that location requires quarantine. then what happens to location #2 the very next week on your schedule if they also require q'tine? you can't play.
    3. has bwf considered any contingencies in case various travel restrictions are still in force at various locations? it sure doesn't look like it.
the tournaments they want to keep for og qualifying should be given the highest priority and spread out, unless they use 1 single location like practically all other sports are working on. this would avoid high risk exposure from constant travel. if an athlete qualifies but ends up sick, their post sickness recovery will prevent them from being 100% for the og they qualified for.

isn't it true you may 'recover' from a severe flu/pneumonia but your lungs are never the same?

I am pretty optimistic that the BWF can fulfil 80%+ of the tournaments on this list. The situation in Europe and Asia at least is vastly improving on a day to day basis. We are only in May and the tournament schedule does not appear to get hectic until the end of September. 3 months ago from today we had very little restriction in the world, and for the economy to improve, we have to learn to manage the situation with common sense. This means opening borders and permitting travel to and from countries where the situation is under control and cases are below a certain percent.

I think it is obvious that if there is a mandatory quarantine in a country, then it will not be able to go ahead (See Czech International in March). But, tournaments cannot be cancelled purely because some players cannot attend due to restrictions in their own country (I say this as someone living in the UK where most European countries are finding their feet again and we are still in the middle of it).

There might be some consideration for a "protected ranking" for players who are adversely affected by the situation in their country. Again, there is no point getting too concerned about it yet as this is still a long time away. I think we should just be grateful that BWF are doing their best to be proactive in this situation, as opposed to taking the easy way out and cancelling everything altogether.
