Update on Positive COVID-19 Cases at Asian Leg of HSBC BWF World Tour
    Tuesday, January 12, 2021
    TEXT BY BWF STAFF
    https://bwfworldtour.bwfbadminton.c...19-cases-at-asian-leg-of-hsbc-bwf-world-tour/

Badminton World Federation (BWF) and Badminton Association of Thailand (BAT) can confirm three of the four players who tested positive for COVID-19 earlier today at the Asian Leg of the HSBC BWF World Tour have been cleared to take their place in the YONEX Thailand Open.

They are confirmed as Saina Nehwal (India), HS Prannoy (India), and Jones Ralfy Jansen (Germany).

The fourth player, Adham Hatem Elgamal from Egypt, has been withdrawn.

    ========================================

    The conclusions are as follows:
    • Nehwal, Prannoy and Jansen tested positive on the PCR test but their antibody IgG was positive. A positive antibody test means a person has been infected with the COVID-19 virus at some point in the past. It does not mean they are currently infected. The trio all contracted COVID-19 in late 2020. The committee was satisfied that they are not infected and do not pose a danger to the tournament.
    • Elgamal tested positive on the PCR test but his antibody IgG was negative, which indicates he has no antibodies for the virus. Elgamal had not contracted COVID-19 before. The committee advised for the player to be withdrawn.
Elgamal, a mixed doubles player, will now be taken to hospital for further observation and tests and will remain in isolation for a minimum 10 days at the hospital.

His mixed doubles match with partner Doha Hany scheduled for this evening has been postponed.

BWF and Badminton Association of Thailand (BAT) will continue to follow all protocols outlined by the local health authorities to ensure the safety of all other participants, with stringent contact tracing measures activated.

Subsequently, the Egyptian team are considered high risk. Hany is categorised as direct contact and therefore has to self-quarantine and be tested daily until further notice. Women’s singles player Hadia Hosny is a close contact and can play subject to a negative test.

Nehwal and Parupalli’s singles matches – declared a walkover earlier today – will be rescheduled for tomorrow.

Does anyone have any info on Heo Hwang Hee? Looks like a good prospect. Contrast to the usual grinding style of Korean badminton, he plays more attacking style. Refreshing to watch

he was a decent junior that had some hype behind him.... has hasnt had any real good results at all really but he is still only 25... ive heard/read he is big/stocky for singles player and is not the quickest but as you've mentioned he has a strong attacking style....hopefully he can pick things up. him and Jean hyeok-jin both look like they will be the korean singles players for couple more years...son wan ho looks like he will probably retire soon

nothing? if you look at the big picture continental associations are nothing more bwf's geographic foot soldiers.
    • who certifies the referee? bwf.
    • who publishes the set of rules the referee must enforce? bwf.
    • who created the rule that handcuffs a players career, even at the lower tournaments?
    • what are the 2 main things everyone is playing for?
      • 1. bwf ranking points
      • a distant 2nd is money
    • and who sets the number of ranking points available and the distribution of prize money for all tournament levels? bwf.
    • bwf can even grant ranking points to certain tournaments they claim they do not 'own': thomas/uber, continental championships, etc.
to think bwf has nothing to do with some aspects of badminton -in regards to badminton as a professional athletic pursuit- is something bwf has used to defer their responsibility and target of blame. it's such a bullshit way to govern an int'l professional sport.

does bwf have the knowledge, personnel and ability to run our sport correctly... on the level of the other major int'l professional sports? if they do where is their courage to make changes?

back on topic: what a relief it is there was time to reschedule the matches for the players who tested false(?) positive. :)

Yeah if I remember correctly, Son and Sung Jihyun (his wife) had both planned to retire after the Olympics but had to postpone their plans due to the delay

"Postponed"? There's no way he can play that match now. Strange, strange wording. Just say directly that the Koreans got a walkover instead of quietly updating Tournament Software

Well the Malaysian pair squeaked through. But it's not a convincing win. Lethargic and slow at times...their experience helped them keep calm and wear down the Indian youngsters towards the end.
Consider me impressed with the Indian pair..

    Dear All
First of all Happy New Year to everyone
I am now in Bangkok and part of the Bubble.
Very glad things turned out for the better and players were reinstated.
However, I am surprised by the little activity here.
Normally page after page would be filled with comments and views, but this time it seems different.
    Take care, stay safe
    Morten

Two power houses, China and Japan are missing, not too many interesting matches, more activities and posts in the later rounds. Good luck.

Kashyap retired midway in the third game. Most likely due to injury. Hope it's not serious.

    from https://360badminton.com/news/four-players-tested-positive-for-covid-19-bwf-confirms/

"The entire Indian team has now been categorized as “high risk” by the Thai health authorities. All players and their entourage are undergoing self-quarantine in their respective rooms and will take PCR tests today. Other Indian players are still allowed to continue competing at the Thailand Open..."

entire team high risk but still allowed to compete. is something getting lost in translation?
