Awesome job, man. I'm glad we got this whole experimentation thing started around here. I'm wondering what people will think of next! (Shh, it's the colors...)

    You’re right:)

I am surprised that they weren’t the same colour.

Mind you, I remember having BG65 in dark colours. Didn’t like them at all and switched back to the lighter colours. The feel just felt different.

It was the same for me with BG80 - for some reason I always thought the dark blue played best, and I tried ALL the colours.

And there was a very rare graphite-grey Nanogy 95 that played completely differently to the boggo caramel one...

Great write up - super like. I've been pondering as I hear 2 sided arguments and this has cleared many questions.

What is next on the list? Are you going to test more variables like different brand or string type to confirm?

Already running is the same experiment with no pre-stretch vs. 10% pre-stretch. And the first data points are looking very interesting already. :)

Normally I would say that with pre-stretch the stringbed would lose tension less quick compared to no pre-stretch. But now I'm guessing it doesn't make any difference, as with the 1P vs 2P. :)

    Nice testing, btw!

It's really nice to see a little scientific method instead of mumbo jumbo and wishes ! :)

After the pre-stretch vs no pre-stretch, will you do fast pull vs slow pull ?

I don't think so. The difference on the WISE there is so small, no way that this has a significant impact on anything.

When we have a few of these nerdy science stuffs, can we compile a linked list in a sticky for future reference?

That's a great idea! @kwun, what do you think?

No need, Si - I did that one aaaaaages ago, when I first got my WISE. No appreciable difference.

(Well, to playability; it made the stringing take a good five minutes longer. WISE themselves suggest using "fast" for everything other than situations where a difficulty is anticipated, for what it's worth.)

Being a flying clamps happy user, I really, really would enjoy s_mair to do the test : tension accuracy / fixed clamps VS flying clamps

Edit : for sure using only flying clamps will reduce the overall tension, due to the double-pull necessity (3 double-pulls at least, 2 for the last mains, one for the first two crosses, knowing that the first double-pull for the beginning of the mains could partially have less loss due to the fact that you can pull the string in the other direction after the first double-pull. And control the "ping" by pinching the string after having performed the first 4 or six central mains.)
So the real question asked is more : how much does the only flying clamps stringjob process affect the tension result compared to the "usual" fixed clamping one ...

    Seconded - very strongly.

I use fixed clamps religiously for my entire ten-year career, and I want to know how much time I pissed away for how much more tension :)

Finger in the air, I'd say you drop a pound or two from what I remember when doing very unscientific tests. Would like to see Simon do a proper job of course.

I'm afraid I will have to pass on that one. First, because I have zero experience with flying clamps (apart from abusing them as starting clamps...). And second, because I think the whole question is easy to answer:
If you have useable fixed clamps, then use them!
If you don't... well... guess what.
