Sindhu (IND) v Mia Blichfeldt (DEN) - Ratchanok Intanon (THA) v Gregoria M. Tunjung (INA) MEN'S DOUBLES KNOCK-OUT DRAW WOMEN'S DOUBLES KNOCK-OUT DRAW WOMEN'S SINGLES KNOCK-OUT DRAW MEN'S SINGLES KNOCK-OUT DRAW More intensity finally arrives when all categories moving forward to next round... Mixed doubles, it's highly likely we'll witness all Chinese finals in gold medal match on Friday. The possible plot twist perhaps coming from the dangerous darkhorses WataHiga who could deliver extraordinary feat to overcome their nemesis Wang/Huang despite head-to-head stats isn't encouraging for the Japanese challengers, only won of ten encounters. The Chinese is hungry for the victory after 16-month hibernation, long break absence is nothing for them as indicated by good result so far. Men's doubles, the Minions who're surprised by Lee/Wang in group meet will shift focus to keep their gold medal chance alive, clear favorite to overcome MAS youngsters Aaron Chia/Soh WY as they did in seven previous meetings. Another INA hopefuls, the veterans Ahsan/Setiawan need right tactic once again to topple the energetic and dynamic Kamura/Sonoda who could beat the Daddies on their good day. China towering duo Li/Liu should have no serious trouble to conquer Danish combination Astrup/Rasmussen. Then reigning All England champs Endo/Watanabe against the well-improved Lee/Wang duel probably is the most interesting quarterfinal tie to follow and unpredictable. Women's doubles, Polii/Rahayu have quite favorable draw than fierce competition in bottom half draw where two home pairs plus Chinese top contenders standing together. The Indonesians must maximize their effort to subdue the inconsistent CHN #2 pair Du Y/Li YH. If they could prevail, next opponent should be Lee SH/Shin SC. Nothing impossible for them to enter finale and present first ever women's double medal for INA contingent. Chen/Jia facing tough test after being drawn in competitive group stage, the Chinese duo are challenged by world number one Fukushima/Hirota, the toughest Japanese combination to overcome if we take a look to their stats. Two-time World Champions MatsuNaga meet familiar rival Kim/Kong, the Koreans potential to reach final four considering Japanese pair unconvincing performance in group stage. MS TOP SEED JINX CONTINUES A massive upset is created by Heo Kwang Hee who shocks top contender Kento Momota in two-straight games, 21-15 / 21-19. The Korean displays superb play, composed, exhibiting solid defense combined with sharp attacking smashes where the Japanese star is far from his usual best, less familiar to this KOR underdog game plan and can't anticipate Heo shots well plus host pressure contributing vital role for his unexpected outing. Believe it or not, only one top-seed in this category who could top OG podium, it's Lin Dan in Beijing 2008. *Post match Interview : Some seeded players also falter one by one, Ng Ka Long lost to Guatemala's Kevin Cordon, the man who stunned Chen Long in 2011 London World Championships first round. Kantaphon Wangcharoen also can't pass GBR obstacle Toby Penty. Both Chou Tien Chen and Jonatan Christie have hard times to overcome their valiant opponents, Brian Yang and Loh Kean Yew respectively. The most engaging MS last sixteen tie to pay attention should be two matches that involving Chinese players, defending champion Chen Long will find difficult test in his campaign to defend gold medal, Lee Zii Jia who has transformed into dangerous players, Yonex All England 2021 is true evidence. Shi Yuqi has long time rival Jonatan Christie, these two protagonists experience rollercoaster in their career and seek breakthrough in Tokyo to redeem previous setback. This meeting reminds us for 2018 Asian Games premature encounter when Christie suceeded to the Chinese heart-throb. Women's singles frontrunners start to flex their muscles against more serious threat, Ratchanok Intanon shouldn't underestimate Tunjung despite she's the upperhand in previous meetings. PanAm players Michelle Li, Zhang Beiwen could push their opponent into the limit. Another engaging duel is expected coming from Sindhu-Blichfeldt judging the Dane has significant development and beat Indian in their last encounter.
The most exciting day of the tournament. Japan has 8 competitors left, you wonder how many will be left at the end of the day. All of them are expected to win except YutaArisa, since they can still play for Bronze. Even Tsuneyama knows he can beat Ginting. With their Ace gone, you wonder how well they can weather the storm. I hope YutaArisa can give a medal winning performance.
Uninspiring team kits in this Olympics. Many teams are wearing the same old Yonex design, the China's Yonex jerseys looks like it was recycled from the 90s.
Viktor Axelsen has never beaten Momota before. Momota is no longer in this tournament. Viktor can't ask for more luck. Also, the same for Antonsen. Antonsen was destroyed by Momota at the WC final in 2019. Antonsen doesn't have to face Momota either. No excuses for those two.
BTW, I think the MS upset has to be related to the lack of top international competition for Ng Ka Long and Momota. Both had trouble participating in international tournaments before the Olympics. Both were out of form because they lacked competition at the top level. There may be further upsets, watch out. If anything, perhaps the pandemic is a boon to the lower ranked players.
AA has never beaten Ginting. So I don't think he's a lock to make the finals. His part of the bracket is pretty tough. VA will make it to QF easy. Then he will likely face SYQ. It's a 50-50 game but I think VA wins. In any case, I think it's safe to say this version of Momota-san isn't beating any of these top players at this time. Hope he recovers soon and plays well in WC in December.
My picks for today's matches. MD: Minions win Li/Liu win Endo/Watanabe narrow win Daddies win WD: CHN narrow win over Indonesia. KOR win KOR win narrow win over MatsuHara CHN win, because Hirota is injured. XD: ZSW/HYQ win WYL/HDP win All China final here.
I don't think either VA or Antonsen will make the final for sure. Lots of things can happen. They could be knocked out tomorrow. For VA, even a weakened Momota can beat VA because VA has some sort of mental block and loses confidence when he plays Momota.
If INA playing Dora/YiFan yeah maybe CHN may win but INA WD pair is used to CHN WD now... They are not afraid of those 2.
Seems like yonex only have good design for team JPN lol LiNing definitely has surpassed yonex in terms of design and quality, I need team INA to go back to LiNing
75th anniversary of yonex with its retro look. Unfortunately, the retro look was never very fashionable and on the greatest sporting advertising stage, a massive chance has been lost.
It's the Olympics, anything can happen tbh. I for one am going for either of the below to win Gold: Shi Yuqi Jonatan Christie Anthony Ginting Viktor Axelsen Anyone else, and I'd be disappointed - especially if Anders Antonsen wins, that would be terrible. Chen Long - already had his moment, but I wouldn't be disappointed to see him win - it would put him up there with Lin Dan tbh - multiple time WC/AE/2 time Olympic champion. Also, when did China revert back to Yonex gear? Looks good seeing the old Yonex fonts instead of the Li-Ning ones. Indonesia's kit looks horrible - and seems that the shirts aren't the sweat resistant ones - Jonatan Christie had to change his shirt twice!
All the kits are so lousy. Its just like kits for tournaments. Indonesia one has always been meh but i bought 2016 China Olympic jersey ( the one they used for that whole year, the blue and red) and its nice but this tournament, can only say disappointed with it.
Based on match schedule, Watanabe only has 3 hours of rest in between his XD and MD? Damn, how is he gonna cope against the likes of LeeWang.
