The surprising package will face mammoth task to continue his gallant Viktor Axelsen. The Dane outwits the lackdaisical Shi Yuqi, 21-13 / 21-13. The Chinese seems has no winning desire, quite frustrated how to crack Axelsen game plan. Former World Champion is much better in court coverage, defense, attacking smash and mental aspect. It needs long time for Shi to regain his confidence as looks like he succumbs to prolonged injury. Luckily for China to has veteran Chen Long as their young generation still far behind, title-holder checks into semifinal after experienced gruelling match to vanquish the resilient Chou Tien Chen. Full of long rallies and netplay to lift the shuttlecock and punished with hard smash, nothing extraordinary in this long duration and slow pace match. The Taiwanese runs out of steam in lase stage of final game and Chen propels attacking shots that ended the fatigue Chou. Most interesting quarters saw Anthony Ginting finally prevails and springs hope for INA MS camp after quite long time, 17 years since Taufik Hidayat and Sony Dwi Kuncoro standing on Athens 2004 podium. Ginting inconsistency problem is exhibited in second game and the beginning of decider, fortunately he's back with his attacking style to beat Anders Antonsen tactical game. Both players show good fight till the end as Antonsen relying mostly on his accurate placing to quell his aggressive opponent. Without underestimating Cordon, world number two Axelsen is highly likely will book final berth. Bottom-half semifina should be more appealing to watch, the speedy Ginting has positive head-to-head stats, 8-4 against Chen Long including last meeting in BWF World Tour Final, December 2019. On paper, it's gloom prospect for the vast experienced Chinese to balance his younger opponent quick and explosive style, interesting to wait how the match will going. FINALLY WD MEDAL! One of badminton powerhouses Indonesia has collected badminton Olympic medal in almost all five categories since Barcelona 1992 but WD is still elusive until Polii/Rahayu realize this big dream, thanks to their persistence, discipline to overcome adversity and tough times. The Indonesians extend their winning record over Lee SH/Shin SC, more compact in rotation plus sharp angle attacking smash by Rahayu than the hurry scurry Koreans. They will find arduous test in gold medal match, top contenders Chen/Jia who power past another Korea representative Kim SY/Kong HY, a convincing feat by the Chinese. FIRST EVER FOR TPE A sensational hat-trick early this year is no fluke for Lee Yang/Wang Chi Lin who present terrific play in final, thanks to their superiority in front area. Li/Liu can’t balance super fast TPE duo, solid placement and strong defense too. They beat number 1 (Minions), 2 (Daddies), 3 (Li/Liu) and 4th seed (Endo/Watanabe) en route to clinch MD crown, a very deserved gold medalist, impeccable! Tragic ending for INA MD following the Daddies fail to secure bronze medal. The momentum swings to Aaron Chia/Soh WY in decider, MAS pair increasing the tempo that send trouble to Ahsan/Setiawan. AN IDEAL WS FINAL Top-two seeds facing off in gold medal match, a rarity in Olympic Games where many upsets happen. Chen Yufei fulfills her higher-rankes status to He Bingjiao, both players have similar tactical awareness, the calmer and stay focus Chen control the match in final game as she more faster to trouble well-improved lefthander. Tai Tzu Ying- Sindhu involved in tight opening match as they're traded point each other until Tai seize the right moment at the end of game. More confident Taiwanese ace exhibits marvelous deceptive shots with better accuracy to outplay the Indian in the second, 21-18 / 21-12. One step closer for Tai to pocket title in major event, this time is the biggest one!
Realistically, for Kevin Cordon, it'd probably be one match too many for him tomorrow against the tall Dane, Axelsen, who is absolutely fired up now that his nemesis Momota is out of the way.
Will Ginting play well tomorrow or will his rhythm be disrupted by nightmares about today's match...?
If Kevin Cordon can somehow push it to rubber game and keep it close in the decider, Victor might get frustrated and give the game away. But I just don't see it right now considering how he vanquished Shi Yuqi.... Ginting vs the old Dragon should be the more unpredictable one. Ginting wrestle G3 back yesterday but don't think the same will happened if Chen Long has the lead in the latter part of the game. Experience vs youth. Attack vs Defense.....hope it'll be a good one.
Is anyone else seriously considering buying the same yellow wrist watch that Kevin Cordon is wearing?
It will be an easy match for VA. I think Ginting beats CL, but it'll be a good match. Looking forward to tomorrow!
Is Kevin Cordon under-ranked because he cannot afford to travel to as many tournaments? Even if he beats VA and CL to take Gold Medal, his ranking will still be like 30-something.
Bookmakers put ChenLong as favourite against Ginting. Imo, it will be very difficult for Ginting to beat CL, he already looked tired in G3 yesterday. CL is super experienced in this type of tournament and will be the second badminton player to medal in 3 Olympics, so he will relax. After just being 2 points away of being dumped out in R16, i am sure he will reach the Final.
I actually confuse to see the schedule before, how in the hell MD and WS are done before WD. And then I realize they set it like that, so on the final day of badminton, it will be MS and WD, where Japan probably is really confident to bag Gold. Sad to see even no representation from them on the semis.
We are reaching the end of the Badminton tournament at the Tokyo Olympics 2020 (or should it be renamed as 2021?). CHN and TPE bag the first 2 Gold Medals. Another one up for grab today between CHN and TPE, where Tai Tzu Ying has a 15-3 H2H lead over Chen Yufei. Bear in mind that they have not faced each other since Tai's All-England triumph in March 2020 and the CHN player beat her opponent twice in the last 3 encounters. It will be a tough battle and I predict that Tai Tzu Ying has a slight edge.
As for Men's Singles, it is incredible to see the 34 yo Kevin Cordon reaching probably the pinnacle in his career, after beating Heo Kwang Hee in the QF. Like most of you here, I think Viktor Axelsen is just an obstacle too great for Kevin to overcome. The 27 yo Danish World No 2 is on course to sweep the last major title and add it to his collection of World Championships (2017), European Championship (2018, 2016), and the All-England Open (2020). In the lower half, the 24-yo Anthony Sinisuka Ginting (youngest player of the bunch) hopes to reach the Final as he has a favourable 8-4 H2H record against Chen Long. However, the reigning Olympic Gold medallist has beaten higher-seeded Lee Zii Jia and Chou Tien-Chen en-route to the SF. I hope Ginting can play to his best and secures at least a Silver medal.
I think MenSingles will always be the last regardless if there is any or no JPN player in the Final since it is the biggest discipline, or should i say more prestigious than Doubles.
Is European Championship the same as European Games? Man, that is complete arsenal of his MajorTitles and he can only win more after this Olympic. With Olympic, he will have 5 majors won.
No. The 300 and 500 level tournaments provide pretty good cash prizes. If Kevin Cordon were that good, he could make a net profit by qualifying for the top tournaments and placing in them. Kevin Cordon had a good run this tournament and avoided facing Momota. When he avoided facing Momota, his bracket was very good to get to the semi-finals. Unfortunately, barring some bizarre injury or mental meltdown by Viktor, I think Kevin Cordon’s run stops today.
Kevin Cordon getting a silver medal would be great for Guatemala. Unfortunately, barring some freak injury or a mental meltdown to Viktor, Kevin Cordon’s run will stop today.
For a European player, I would the European Championships to be a major title as the participants are really the top European players Winning it is equivalent to winning a Super 300 title in terms of ranking points (7000). As for the European Games, it was only played twice (2015 and 2019) and Viktor withdrew in 2019, leaving Anders Antonsen to win the Gold. Hence, I wouldn't consider it as a major title.
There is no top Europeans playing in European Games? I just think as long as there are top players and Multievent then its a Major for AA. Like the injury to Axelsen isnt exception.
