    BRONZE - INDONESIA & THAILAND

    FINLAND DEBUT
A blessing in disguise following Suzhou withdrawal to host 17th Sudirman Cup due to CHN government restriction to curb COVID-19 pandemic as Finland, one of Scandinavian countries replacing the vacant spot to stage BWF major team event for the first time, a milestone for badminton development. What kind of story to write in Vantaa, another triumphant episode for defending champion or sensational breakthrough by the unexpected team to lift the trophy? High appealing showcase to await in eight-day competition ahead. Since this year edition, Sudirman Cup requires qualifying round and consisting of 16 participating teams (from 12 teams at previous editions), top two of each group advance into quarterfinals (knock out phase).

    A TEAM TO BEAT
Top-seed is still favourite to extend the world's mixed team supremacy even though some high-profile names are excluded, China will relying on the Olympic Champions Wang YL/Huang DP, new heroine Chen Yufei and women’s doubles prowess Chen QC/Jia YF meanwhile men’s category remains their weak link to lose point. Shi Yuqi begins his journey to carry leading role in the absence of “semi-retired” Chen Long, also several MD back-up pairs, He/Tan, Liu/Zhou who will testing their capability here. Having 16-month absence China bagged two golds and becomes the overall champion in Tokyo, Sudirman Cup certainly one of their major targets this year alongside Thomas-Uber Cups and World Championships end of this year.

    TIME TO REDEEM
Japan has below par outcome, battered in homeground Olympics and Sudirman Cup is expected to offer chance to bounce back and take revenge over their 0-3 final defeat against arch rival China, two years ago in Nanning. Spearheaded by two-time World Champion KentoMomota, Japan looks slightly weaken than two years ago following the retirement of men’s doubles key players, Kamura/Sonoda plus Hiroyuki Endo and exacerbated by Sayaka Hirota surgery that forcing WD world number one combination must skip this event. Nevertheless it’s powerful enough to enter last round with some notable players participation like Okuhara, Yamaguchi, Matsumoto/Nagahara and Tokyo OG bronze medalists Watanabe/Higashino.

    WINNING MISSION
PBSI has announced ambitious target to recapture the very own Sudirman Cup that never coming back home since inaugural edition 1989. The “Merah Putih” squad still banking on mostly same faces and the veterans, having advantage in men’s doubles with The Minions and Daddies plus blossoming hope on Polii/Rahayu who created sensational victory in Tokyo OG and men’s singles Olympics bronze medalist Anthony Ginting, let alone mixed doubles duo lacklustre performance through Jordan/Oktavianti. Lost 1-3 to Japan in semifinal of 2019 edition, barring any massive upset, high possibility the Indonesians will meet one of top-two contenders in last four, either Japan or China.

    POTENTIAL DARKHORSE
Four-time winner Korea frequently delivers unpredictable strength in team event despite only occupy 5-8 seeds this time, the Ginseng team is solid enough to top group B as Chinese Taipei doesn’t bring their best ammunition, core players as Lee Y/Wang CL, Tai Tzu Ying stay at home. Korea mainstay will comprise of An Se Young, Kim/Kong or Lee/Shin, Choi/Seo and Seo/Chae, the only minimum chance to contribute point is men’s singles sector. Still fresh on memory how KOR created biggest upset in Gold Coast 2017, tackled strong favourite China with dramatic ending. Semifinalist of last edition, Thailand can't be underestimated despite the leading lady Ratchanok Intanon skips this event due to personal matter, deep sadness after her mother passed away. The fast improved Pornpawee Chochuwong, XD aces Puavaranukroh/Taerattanachai, three-time WJC Kunlavut Vitidsarn and WD world #8 Kititharakul/Prajongjai are among Thai squad member.

    STRING OF UNDERDOGS
India coming to Finland without their WS iconic star Pusarla Sindhu, they might complicate the defending champion China in men's department. Denmark has formidable men’s singles players and supported by their rising women’s singles and possibly doubles categories could spring some upsets. Malaysia sets modest quarterfinal target as BAM named all young and up-and-coming players in Vantaa meet, powered by Lee Zii Jia and Aaron/Soh who’re expected to trouble JPN in group-stage match, interesting match up in group D will pit MAS against the upbeat team ENG.

~ It's understandable that the top-seed doesn't field their main players in singles category against weakest team in group A.

    THA v IND (Court 2)
    upload_2021-9-26_9-13-48.png
~ A surprising package that Sai Praneeth will play XD, IND team might have chance to steal point through MD, MS or WD. Let alone WS and XD which will be THA favour. A crucial tie for both teams as the winner of this match probably would manage runner-up position (on paper scenario).

Time and again, Indian management shows they are so unprofessional. They've fielded Sindhu, Saina, Lakshya in Doubles before and now Sai Praneeth. Feel bad for upcoming player Tanisha Crasto who has to compromise. Have never seen top level countries like Japan, China, Indonesia field singles players in Doubles.

And they chose BSP, simply the laziest guy on court. There's literally no way he can inject the pace required for XD, let alone against top pair like Dechapol/Sapsiree

KS missed the easiest kill. Watching him every time will make you sad. It's just like mentally he doesn't want to be there like a depressive guy. Nothing but pity for him.

Both PJB and NBA strongman Zeniya Kinji have publicly stated that they do not expect Team Japan to be able to take revenge at this early stage; revenge will, apparently, have to wait until next year at the World Championships in Tokyo.

Okuhara will, incidentally, be missing from the Sudirman squad.

I think they didn't even had any selection trials for XD. That's how serious they are about the doubles category.

I watched half of the match between Nella Nyqvist and He Bingjiao. Although Nella lost by quite a big margin,I think she has potential, just too many errors and lack of experience. I was surprised to find out she was born in 2006. I think if Finland can develop her properly, she could be a talent but being from Finland, maybe it was hard to find people on her level to train with and that is holding her back. To be the best, you still have to play among the best. I hope her coaches can solve this issue.

I wonder which is more "embarrassing" getting nutmegged in football or be caught by a deceptive shot in Badminton ?

I didn't manage to watch the MS match but the scoreline is much closer than I expected so I think that's a promising sign for Finland too,but the male Finland player is aged 27,so its a bit late for him to become a top player compared to Nella. But maybe he can train with her and help bring up her level of play.

Don't think either is embarrassing. It's both part of the game and both is due to the opponent playing well.
If I had to pick one, I'd say badminton is more "embarassing" because you can closely watch what your opponent is doing from the best "seat in the hall" and also have time to react. In football you're so close that sometimes you can't even see the ball well (because the oppoent shields it from you) and your reaction time does not exist. I'd also say you're more likely to already have momentum in a given direction in football, because there really isn't a base position you can assume as you have to follow the opponent.
The consequences are also less dire: in badminton you lose the point, in football you can come back from a nutmeg with a good sprint and even if you don't, the opponent still has a lot left to do to actually score.

Kalle Koljonen is 2021 European Championships bronze medalist, he has decent performance against the nervous & monotonous Lu GZ.

Yes I'm sure he is a good player, especially playing against China,I believe it's a lot of pressure and he handled it well.

But I still think overall,Nella has more potential to be a top player because she started young and she has more time on her side to identify her weaknesses and improve. I believe the Finland coaches knows that too that's why they are letting her play in these big tournaments even though she is just a teenager.

~ Reigning DEN Open Champions are favoured to deliver opening poing for GER team. Weisskirchen won previous meeting against Tokyo OG headline maker Heo KH, interesting battle to follow.

    INA v NBFR

~ The Russians doesn't field real strength to oppose strong team INA, they will show true color in next matches, facing DEN and CAN.
