You do realise that he has almost always been playing with heavier racquets right? ZFII, DZS, AX99, and now AX99Pro.

Anyways, I don't see it as trying to play like Lin Dan. His physicality currently isn't there to support the defensive, controlling play style that he used to have, nor is his shot quality. I see him smashing as a way to try to obtain winners since he can no longer rely on his opponents making errors because he's the one that's making those errors. But his attacks just aren't strong enough either

And another thing is that the attacking type Momota is reminiscent of him back in highschool, where he smashed a lot more

To me Momota that just came back from ban is the strongest. He looks so cool and relaxed, as if playing for fun, and still crushing everyone without going for hard winners. At one point I believe he was using astrox 88d.

I think that he played with a 4u OG 88D. He has now allegedly made the switch to a heavier cat, a 3u Astrox 99pro.

I remember Ginting also using the OG 88d before the switch to li ning. I always did regret choosing the 88S over it, oh well

    When will his ranking drop?

Maybe this could help him get more matches in.

Right now he is starting against tough players from the get go.

Malaysia I see his first match is against Wangcharoen. I don't see Momota taking him. Dude's a physical freak of nature.

    @Nine Tailed Fox

Against Gemke he did use a few neutralising shot. His game looked better until he got tired. The very first rally I saw the previous Momota. But then he got tired and started to get back to the new Momota

I hope he will not fall too much the point he will unseeded. If he does, he could end up meeting players like LZJ or Axelsen in the first round

hence i was surprised why he opt out of SG Open, unless he is confident that he will go deep in both tournaments in Malaysia.

You know clearly it is not only LZJ or Axelsen is his threat. He lost to different players in different tournaments.
By the way, once the ranking is unlocked, he will be out of Top 8 bracket.

Can confirm that original 88D in 4U is well balanced and stable, preferred racket if I did not have a preference for Li Nings.

Kento Momota is slated to meet Rasmus Gemke in Round 1 of next week's Malaysia Masters. Is he ready to take the challenge?

Greatest post of whole thread. All this hype about Axelsen makes me cringe. People talk about Axelsen having reached some kind of super saiyan level and men’s singles being boring because of it. All this because he managed to beat Momota ONCE and has not had any proper opponents for a while. Reality is that Axelsen has not improved at all. And even in their last encounter Kento stopped Axelsen’s smashes easily, except for when he got to hit them from an overly good position. He also managed to win several rallies by simply playing chill and returning Axelsen’s shots, making him look like a beginner. All the badminton professionals know that the real king is Kento ”greater than even Lin Dan” Momota, the badminton prodigy from Japan.

Though i'm a fan of Momota, I disagree with this statement.
Let's not bring Lin Dan into the picture here.:)

    I agree except two things:

    1. Axelsen did improve - not a Super Saiyan like Momota was or like Lin Dan was but he did improve

    2. Greater than Lin Dan - No bro. While Momota was a class above everyone he could still have improved on his attack.

Is Momota back to his best? He won via a walkover

Not his best, but I think he is 75% back or something like that, I saw him training in Malaysia.

My coach joked a little and said that people win via walkover when others are ”scared to play agaisnt them”. :D
