SYQ’s overhead/round the head racket skills are unparalleled

Well I guess Momota losing was expected. At least he didn’t give up on match point despite having only 7 points

Why? I dun get it, momota can obviously play and give a good fight in the first game. What happened in the second?

Momota is clearly motivated and playing good badminton there in the first. Good enough to win 100 and 300 series tournaments and regain confidence. He won't play those, however, because his career is managed by the worst people in the world. So he will be sent to top level tournaments, get bad draws, lose, lose confidence, play even worse the next time around. "Bird Japan".

That being said, personal responsibility also plays a role. His body language in the second game is unacceptable. I've never seen Nadal or Djokovic sulk around like that in a tournament that's important to them.

He is a top committed player though I believe so it makes lower tournaments slightly complicated but if that’s what it takes I don’t see why management won’t let him. He was playing well in the first game in the faster side of the court which makes the scoreline for G2 very odd but SYQ did play more aggressively too. It really is a confidence thing for Momota, the game is there I think. I thought some old rivalry could boost him today but alas

Good point. He should have registered for Thailand masters next week. I guess Bird Japan will start doing that from tournaments in March.

    Quite bad schedule from bwf.
IMO this week should super 300 first so some player can rest in a week.

Aya Ohori vs Putri Kusuma Wardani. None were expected to win a title here but both can't be blamed for lacking fighting spirit, what a match... 17-21 25-23 21-23

Man, I’m feeling old. Guru Sai Dutt coaching Priyanshu. Some day, we’ll see Ajay Jayaram, Kashyap in coaching setup too I guess.

Momota-Shi YQ "big match" only invited enthusiasm in opening game as he displayed a glimpse of good strokes then the Japanese performance degraded drastically in the second, playing like a novice who just learning badminton, obviously two-time World Champion has massive pychological burden to tackle, it's really pitiful to witness former MS king turns to be miserable player.

Most likely midnight show is inevitable consequence looking at today's first round order of play, using 3 courts where each court will stage 19 matches. Istora isn't spacious indoor stadium, tough to get perfect angle for TV coverage if the organizer applied four courts.

It's quite expected considering accumulated fatigue from back to back mandatory tours.
