Badminton singles seedings redrawn after protests

A threat of a revolt by some nations for future events has meant yet another re-draw for the singles at the world junior badminton championships.


The five individual tournaments begin today in Auckland.
Controversy has hampered the individual events with nations bickering about how players are seeded and the initial draw being a week later than scheduled.
There are no junior rankings in badminton such as those used in tennis and senior rankings give a disproportionate seeding to players from smaller nations who may play more senior tournaments but may not be as good as those juniors from more powerful countries who aren't allowed to play senior events.
At a discussion between coaches and managers and BWF (Badminton World Federation) officials some examples given were the fact that China's 2007 Asian junior championships semifinalists in the mixed doubles Chai Biao and Xie Jing were not in the seeding list.
However, pairs from Puerto Rico, New Zealand and Australia were seeded.
It was also pointed out that while Indonesia's Asian junior championships girls' doubles gold medallists were requested to be seeded ahead of Korea's Yoo Hyun Young and Jung Kyung Eun, the same logic was not used to seed China's Chen Long, the winner of the boy's event.
Instead, the top seed in the boy's singles is Malaysia's Mohd Arif Abdul Latif, the Asian junior runner-up.
Germany team manager Thomas Lohwieser said it was time the BWF acted to check the situation.
"We all want to see a fair and good tournament but the way it is being done now, it is difficult to see how," Lohwieser said.
"Some of the countries have travelled a long way to compete.
"All we ask is for the federation to lay down fair ground rules so that everyone is aware of them and it is transparent."
Team officials from China, England, Germany, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Netherlands, New Zealand and Singapore made the appeal to the BWF following the release of the individual draw.
Changes have been made to the men's and women's singles which get under way today.
The top seed in the men's singles remains Mohd Arif Abdul Latif with Long Chen the second seed.
Aying Xing from Singapore is the women's top seed followed by China's Xin Liu and countrywoman Lin Wang with Denmark's Anne Hald Jensen fourth.
The doubles and mixed draws have not been changed. The finals are on Sunday.

INA basically has no hopes in the BS. Arif Nandang is only seeded 14th and will possibly face Lim Fang Yang in the fourth round. Adi Pratama is also scheduled to face either Vountus Indra Mawan or Rduch Sebastian in the fourth round.

As for Girl's Singles, Maria Febe should clear her first match but will face the top-seed Xing Aiying in the second match. Pia Zebadiah is seeded 8th and she should progress at least to the QF where the second-seed Liu Xin will await her.

Febby Angguni won her first match (Walkover) but will face a tricky match against a Japanese player Uchida Shizuka tomorrow. Even if she can clear the obstacle, Lydia Cheah Li Ya will be waiting in the third round. Another player, Fanetri Lindaweni will face an Australian-based player Jessica Jonggowisatro in the second round and possibly the 10th-seed Bae Youn Joo in the third round.

In the BD, the Djarum pair Wifqi Windarto/Afiat Yuris Wirawan should have no problem clearing the first two matches and fulfil their 5th seeding, before the hard match against the more experienced Mak Hee Chun/Lim Khim Wah in the QF.

In the GD, the Asian Junior Champion Richi Dili Puspita/Debby Susanto is the top-seed and they should progress at least to the QF where one of the following pair could probably face them: Woon Khe Wei/Tee Jing Yi, the 8th-seed Anne Skelbaek/Maria Helsbol or Xie Jing/Zhong Qianxin. If they can progress to the SF, then Gu Juan/Zhang Beiwen will possibly be their opponent. The other pair of Reni Rosi Hendarni/Krishabella will at most progress to the third round.

In the XD, Wifqi Windarto/Pia Zebadiah have the unlucky draw against the top-seed Tan Wee Kiong/Woon Khe Wei as early as in the second match. The other pair, Mohd Ulinuha/Richi Dili Puspita have matches against a Singapore and Thai pair in the first two rounds.

 

Long duration for today's first round, there are 102 matches with 20 WOs and using 6 courts which has started at 10.00am local time (04.00am WIB).

INA's BS Arif Nandang and Adi Pratama won over easily their opponents, but what's going on to Aditya Arifin and Jr Senatria who give walkovers to AUS and MAS players?

planetstream is broadcasting matches of court 5 and they have audio, no commentary though. u can hear the match and player annoucements in the background and the ref annoucing scores. I was also able to get the coaches comments in one of the matches.........
