    OFF TOPIC for 1 time...

I simply reply Cooler's post...this is the way we tease each others....:Dnot to worry jchan04, if you browse thru the thread, you will know I m the only CAT lady in the forum, and luyi80 is the KITTEN, both of us from the City of CATs, Kuching....

I agree with you that if we offended anyone, just say sorry...I believe, if I offended you which I don't really meant it, and I apologize, I guess, you will accept my apology with an open heart....

Nope. I gz they choose those names because that is how (as an individual)they want to be refered to. If am going say something to the sender China-man then i'll address it to china-man. Say..Shut up....la china-man (Sample only). But i wont say the same to jchan04 (which happens to be of a chinese decent) otherwise i would be addressing to a lot of people. Yeah, we're just going in circles here. To make it simple, address to the person (as what one member says a while ago), discuss on the topic with all TACT.

We cannot ban the word "Chinaman" from our BC Forum

    .
    Greetings,

Found some free time today... I thought I will study to whole thread. :D
What CWB001 said is true.. Our over-sensitive ways will cut little ice here@BC.
We think jamesd20 is saying that the remark "Chinaman" should not be deemed offensive @BC.

cooler is saying he has been offended often; but he ignored them. :D

If "Chinaman" is banned in our BC Forum, then hundreds of other words will have to be banned as well.

It doesn't matter when they joined or how many posts they have made, we are still members of our BC Forum.
But we also know that "Shut up" means "Be quiet", "Be silent", "Say no more",... In Australia, we say "Shut up your face". :D

I will never call huangkwokha a "JAP" anymore, so I should never call Birdwood a "Chinaman". :D

Btw, where are the Malaysians who didn't like to be called "Malays", or Indonesians who didn't like to be called "Indons"? :D

Perhaps, jerby is saying, "Let's not be silly or stupid to be offended too easily. :D
We also know that Gollum has been associated with not only the Navy. :D
Some really get offended with the word "bastards". :D

So, we go back to what Oldhand have said... A quote from Gandhi.
Even Louisa thought "Chinaman" itself cannot be banned from BC. However, she didn't like one scolding the other. :D
If I am not wrong, There are 2 words banned @BC, namely **** and ***. :D

What experienced DinkAlot said is true.

Correct... We are here to talk about Badminton and not about certain words used here.

Yes, kwun knows about the "opposite effect". :)

Mark Twain said it well too.:)

Yes, Just ignore the whole thing.

    Well said by Gollum. :)

Yes... I hope I have not offended anyone here. :)

Chris@ccc, you have a way to take words and sentences out of their context and put some spin on it. I don't want to argue with you about your point of views in post #125 because they are all bits and pieces of information. But at least, you finally made it clear that you are not for banning the word which many of us think is a racial slur and an insult to Chinese communities at least in North America. So let me ask you three questions here: (1) What are the 'hundreds of other words' which 'will have to be banned' 'If "Chinaman" is banned in our BC Forum' (2) do you think that "shut up la..chinaman!" was an insult to me or not? (3) Was calling LYB 'Evil' or 'pest' an insult? In other words, is it okay to dehumanize another baddy person in BC forum? I look forward to your thoughts when you find time.

    And round we go again...

    I'll bite:

    (1) Let's start off with [17 words moderated], ... and, of course, player (as I explained earlier).

    (2) No

    (3) Yes

    Pause Awhile, Please

If this forum has a stated policy on what constitutes an insult, I must confess I'm absolutely in the dark about it.

In any case, it'd be an unprofitable exercise to ban words
From what we have seen, it's still better to ban users ;)

    ____________

PS: This search for a unanimous opinion on what's insulting (or what's comforting) hasn't quite lived up to expectations. The last few pages have also set out a case for this thread to be moved to Forum Feedback.

    And, so, there it goes.

In response to Birdwood's poser (asking for a hundred volatile words), CWB001 had provided a list of 18 words to start with.

17 of those words will not stay - primarily because we really don't need them here and also because Birdwood's query was to chris@ccc.

The curious can always PM CWB001 ;)

Folks, let's keep this thread sane and useful.
It'd be a shame to delete or lock this thread :)

Now really....censorship is something our civilisation has been doing since the darkages.. How long will it take for us to learn it just doesn't work?

censorship doesn't neuralize the message, nor the user. Frankly, all it does is invade a person's rights...
Yes, it is your right to say whatever you want, and it's the receivers right to be offended, and yes, insult the starter of the debate (I present you, the free market of idea's)

Everybody has the right to be offended (all the time), but if you don't like what is being said, get away from it....

Now, Hate-speech is always the touchy part of this subject... But who decides what is hatepseech...the sender of the message, or the receiver? (be honest with yourself)

I'd love to go on ranting on one of my favorite subjects... but I could not possibly say it better than Pen Gillette (one of my hero's ;))

This implies that it started out useful, which I certainly don't agree with.:)

    I completely agree with Jerby.

"Let's keep this campaign sane and peaceful" doesn't mean it started out either sane or peaceful ;)

Good to see you are making good use of the multiquote function!:D

That is not what I meant- quite the opposite. Actually I am not Chinese, but would interpret someone calling someone a chinaman offensive.

But not, I am not offended by anything you have said!

just like sexual harassment or any type of harassment, it is ultimately up to the victim to decide whether or not they have been assault or offended. so ground rule would be: who ever was insulted... should PM that person and ask for an apology... hope the members of this forum would open-heartedly say sorry and forgive and forget the insult. i think another ground rule should be there shouldn't be any negative name-calling or person remarks.

    that's pretty much it.

actually this thread started by BirdWood was good, it helped the involved members understand what is going on and we can be aware of other's sensitivity. so the next time we post, we'll have a second thought. anything is welcome in discussion, and we should be opened minded about it.
