If you want a good tournament, you need Yonex. Yonex has the money. Yonex can get a few top players to California, which is on a very different time zone than where these top players live. Lastly, tournaments on the American continent, both North and South, need to coordinate the tournament dates better, so that players, coaches and supporting staff can plan their trips and have minimal jet lag for the entire trip.
but like any sensible company you don't throw good money at bad money. usa tournaments are not a good return on investment. bwf controls the schedule. it's out of the continental federations control.
Possible 2016 US Open Badminton Championships venue July 5-10, 2016 Kaiser Permanente Arena Santa Cruz, California Home of the Golden State Warriors D-League team this would make a great venue! walking distance to the beach, too, makes for a great mini-vacation trip.
this us open will be the last tournament of 2016 to help determine olympic seedings. it is a possibility (60%) team malaysia will compete in it, since they are looking for a training base in the usa for at least a month leading up to rio. all the smart teams will be doing the same, which is to train in the same time zone as rio in order to reset the body's internal clock for peak performance. that means somewhere in the eastern standard time zone in the usa or canada.
in it's everyday club setting there are 15 courts, all yonex mats. 7 in one row, 8 in another row. http://www.labadmintonclub.com/components/com_gk3_photoslide/thumbs_big/346966courtviews.jpg for a grand prix gold tournament setting there is enough room for 6 courts. it is likely only 4 or 5 courts will be laid out down the middle. 2012 thomas cup pan am trials were held there. https://i.ytimg.com/vi/MxvA-5SC8nU/maxresdefault.jpg ... as you can see it provides better spacing than ocbc.
apparently there was a last minute conflict regarding the availability of the venue. maybe next year it will be in norcal.
May I ask where your source comes from? I talked to a friend who is close to the owners of LABC and helps organize their tournaments in SoCal and he has not heard about anything on it. He stated they have looked into future biddings for the US Open or the Grand Prix in December, but nothing as of yet. I talked to the lead organizer from USAB on this project twice since I was to help with certain things as I did with the one last year in New York. From what I was told in December at the Grand Prix, the week was already booked at that time. I met with her again I believe in late January, and said that BWF had just come to visit the arena a week before. A few weeks after, BWF had approved the tournament and that's when it was officially put on the website. However, I was told that the prospectus was supposed to be out in late February and there isn't anything yet. (But I must point out, none of the tournaments around the time, Taipei GPG, Canada Open, have a prospectus up either). That is all the info I have for now. I will keep this updated should anything change. Update 2: I have talked to another person from LABC, he said he offered up LABC as a backup should it get to that point. It does not sound LABC is to host it as of this moment. Even if LABC is chosen as the backup plan, BWF would have to visit the venue & approve it.
For Larry-Ellison-style support, US Badminton needs to look no further than Zack Snyder. http://www.bloomberg.com/features/2016-zack-snyder-profile/ And he plays at the SGVBC.
Badminton being played by a guy who drives James Bond's car and directs movies about Spartan warrior-kings? That is pretty good press!
looks like the tournament is a go... http://system.bwfbadminton.com/uploads/2016/04/27/YONEX US Open - Prospectus.pdf
Team india just entered their top men's squad: srikanth, prannoy, etc. Still hoping they add saina & pv.
