Japan head coach Park Joo Bong has criticised the Badminton World Federation (BWF) for allowing holders China to play in the ongoing Thomas Cup and Uber Cup qualifying rounds in Macau.

Joo Bong also questioned the logic behind BWF's decision to offer Olympic qualification points for the qualifying rounds, which was the sole reason why China decided to play in both team competitions although they have qualified as hosts of the final rounds in May.

Players will earn 10 per cent of their total world ranking points by just competing in the qualifying rounds even if they lose all their matches and China's Chen Jin, desperate to make the cut for the London Olympics, could be the biggest beneficiary.

"I don't understand why BWF is offering so many points for the Thomas Cup and Uber Cup qualifying rounds. It doesn't make sense for the China to play in the qualifying rounds after they have secured automatic berths for the two events as hosts," said Joo Bong.

"The points offered are too high for a qualifying round and win or lose, a player or a doubles pair will earn 10 per cent of their total world ranking points.

"China can still do well if they have two players or two pairs in an event in the Olympics, so I don't understand why they are fighting so hard to secure maximum spots for London.

"BWF must have a clear qualification guidance and tighten its rules and regulations. China always have their way and BWF has failed to control them."

China had also previously asked Lin Dan to concede a walkover when playing Chen Long to allow him to break into the top four last year and the latter now firmly sits as the World No 3.

Chen Jin is ranked No 5 and the points earned during the qualifiers will be handy as he tries to overtake fourth ranked Peter Gade Christensen of Denmark to qualify for the Olympics with Lin Dan and Chen Long.

China are masters of manipulating every rule in the book and if BWF does not take a firm stand, Joo Bong feels it may affect badminton's future in the Olympics.

Sorry Mr Park Joo Bong, I guess this legendary player has missed the point. The Chinese meaning of doing well is grabbing the gold whatever it takes and to maximise that probability, fulfilling the entry quota of three players into the draw is the only way. He also forgotten we are talking about MS here, Lee Chong Wei is the reason why China is desperate for a third player. Unless he doesnt play in OG, maybe less match fixes could take place ?

the guy just didn't get it, did he?
LYB wants a 1-2-3 on the podium, you can't have a 1-2-3 with just 2 players, can you?

it's a good chance that the CHN WS will do it this time, only just missed out 4 years ago.
as the MS, i 'll say a 50/50 chance. LCW should be seeded to face LD or CL in the SF, i say 50/50 chance one way or the other. if if lost in the semi i wouldn't think he will be too interested to fight for the bronze.

To be honest, there is no sin in trying to win. Isn't that why they athletes exist? There are some cases where the Chinese are stretching the rule in the gray area, like deliberate walkover.

But to me, trying to play more tournaments to gain Olympic points is fair and square. And they don't need to bend the rule to do that, it is within the rule to play the qualifying round.

If someone thinks they shouldn't have 3 qualifying spots in the Olympics, then go ahead and beat them in the tournament so they won't qualify.

As for trying to ask BWF to "control" China, it is unfair to China for the governing body to make rules to specifically control them. such negative policies is what prompted China to do a tit-for-tat bending of the rule in the first place.

maybe he should call for BWF to control LCW, afterall he has been in the number 1 spot for years and taking away all the prize money. duh?

IMHO, Park Joo Bong has made a good point, why would BWF allow CHN to play in the qualifying games when they have secured a place in the finals??? It simply does not make sense. Look at the players CHN team sends to play the qualifying games, do you see Lin Dan, or their best MDs??? No.

Has CHN broken the rules? No probably not.

Is what they are doing against the spirit of the sports? YES, definitely.

Is BWF in a position to correct it? Yes.

Will BWF do anything about it? No. I doubt they will.

All these people need to stop whining about china getting 3 players in olympic games. Chen Jin deserves to be in games more than someone ranked 10th or 15th. I rather the best players get in than Chen Jin be out on a 2 player per country technicality. I think the other countries like denmark or japan are just jealous that chen jin might win a medal instead of their country player.

China did not break any rules here

    .
If we read the article carefully, I believe that Park Joo Bong wasn't criticising China.

China did not break any rules here. China did what the rules allow how they formulate and carry out their plan.

Players/coaches/administrators need to follow the rules. As long as no rule is broken, there is nothing wrong.

I think Park Joo Bong was only criticising BWF for not being thorough enough when making the rules.

I believe BWF should not discourage players / teams to take part in any tournament.

But 10% of ranking points just for taking part (no need to win) is too much, especially in a qualifying tournament.

Without this 10%, CHN would not have participated. And even if CHN participates, I don't think anyone (PJB included) would complain. The root of the problem is this 10%, which I doubt anyone would disagree is a glaring problem in BWF ranking system.

i'm not a fan of the chinese walkover habits, but i must clrearly admit that BWF's rulen are absolutely ridiculous!!

    1. why set up such complicated rules for qualifying? shouldn't the best players play the olympics? one might consider a quota (say not more than 3 or 4 players per nation), but this "if 3 players are under the best 4 they can plyy, but if one is 5 he might not and if 1 is top 8 an one is top 16 2 players may play..." is just bull****. like that, some good players are not allowed to participate, because there's only one player allowed for a country and you literally have to search for players in poistions (say) 50-100 that are allowed to play because there's noone of their country above them. like that, the world number 97 from cyprus may participate, but the world number 5 (and former worldchampion) not? that's ridiculou and i totally understand that the chinese are trying to get their players in the tournmant by all means! the system almost forces them to act this way!!!

    2. why are there so many points at stake in a qualifying tournament? ridiculous! the chinese are allowed to play, so they take the points. it' their right and i would do the same under these circumstances...

And the most frustrating is that after all these CHN things going on for so long BWF still "don't get it" how their stupid unfair rules or no rules in that matter can be mis-used and manipulated to say the least. I know they are nice people in BWF, but if I'm God I will put more IQ and creativity in their brains :)

LYB wants a 1-2-3 on the podium? The desperate way CHN is behaving, LYB s worry is whether CHN MS can get a 1. That s the reason for having a former world champion being escorted as well. You look at the standard of CHN MS. Are they getting better? And the standard of the non-CHN MS. There are at least seven of them who can upset CHN MS and the scary thing for LYB is that these non-CHN MS are still improving. While the whole CHN MS team still rote training against LCW. Hmmm...

Excellent point. The question is have these generous qualification points always been there in TC and just a special for this year?( Would someone please check against TC10 and TC08?)If it s a special addition for this year, then it s obvious BWF is helping CHN get a third MS qualified. In fact BWF has been trying to help CHN all along. Look at the other racquet sports like tennis and table tennis . Don t the Olympics allow only maximum two per event per country? Why is BWF giving a bonus of a possible third for MS and WS while limiting the Doubles events? Which country will benefit from BWF s irregular rule?? CHN ,of course. Why is BWF doing its best to help CHN, including doing nothing about CHN s despicable walkovers and fake matches? For an organisation that s supposed to champion the sport of Badminton rather than favour a member country, the answer has to be money. Remember BWF can impose a ranking penalty system to deal with walkovers ( or some other methods) and have chosen not to, and indirectly aided CHN to win more prize money and ranking points than possible, it would not be surprising that money s being invisibly moved around from A to B to C. Expect a lot of the unexpected in the run up to OG12.

    1. It's not just special for this year. It has always been like that.

    2. I actually think BWF rules penalise teams with strong depth. Isn't it easier to just allow all the top players to enter, without the limiting rules? But I understand that BWF has to conform to certain Olympic guidelines as well.

    3. I also dislike walkovers / fixed games, but these are extremely hard to prove.

Because it isn't. It's just a qualifying tournament. e.g. KOR is not playing in the Uber Cup because they have already qualified.

Has it always been like that? European team championships used to be a separate event right before the individual championship with TUC and SC qualifiers separate. I think only since they did the sensible thing and combine the events does it look like points are awarded for qualiying stage when it really is the points awarded for European Team Championships.
Have to double check if that is 100% accurate ;) ... (maybe it is even the other way around, but what is certain is that there were separate events before)
Let me get some dinner first so I can think straight :p ...
