Looks more of a money thingy than prestige. Tan Sri shd be better. I got a Datuk renting my place for his mistress. Now you call this Datuk? Sure has some priviledges. hehe. Anyway, NBB shd have his. Perhaps he's more conservative than others.
Datuk and Dato A Google search (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malay_titles#Datuk) reveals the following: Federal titles In Malaysia, federal awards are granted by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and some may carry the following federal titles. Such titles are honorary and non-hereditary Datuk Datuk is a federal title has been conferred since 1965 and limited to recipients of PJN (Panglima Jasa Negara) of which there may be up to 200 living at any one time, and PSD (Panglima Setia Diraja) of which there may be up to 200 living at any one time. The PJN and PSN rank 9th and 10th respectively in the rank of federal awards. The wife of a federal Datuk is a Datin State titles The following titles, which roughly correspond to the British knighthood, can be granted by the Ruler or Governor of each state. They are honorary and non-hereditary. Dato' Different from the awarding of Datuk, the award of Dato' (pronounced in similar manner as Datuk) can only be conferred by a hereditary Royal ruler of one of nine Malay states. Other types of Dato': Dato' Seri Utama is the highest state title, below Tun but above Tan Sri. The wife of a recipient is "Datin Seri Utama" . Dato' Seri or Dato' Paduka ranks below the federal titles above. The wife of a Dato' Seri is a Datin Seri. Dato' is the most common chivalrous title. The wife of a Dato' is a Datin, except in Terengganu where they are known as "To' Puan" (not to be confused with "Toh Puan", the wife of a non-hereditary "Tun"). There are also hereditary Dato's from Negeri Sembilan, where titles are held for life by heads of certain families and passed on to their heirs. These are not conferred by the ruler, but passed on through the customary native laws. The wife of a hereditary Dato' is addressed by courtesy as "To' Puan". In other states, certain noble families also have hereditary titles and are addressed as Dato'. For example, the current Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia, Dato Seri Najib Tun Razak, is hereditary Orang Kaya Indera Shahbandar of Pahang and would have been addressed as "Dato'" even if he had not been conferred a "Dato' Seri" state award. Datuk A ruler who is appointed by the Yang Di Pertuan Agong, namely the Governor of Melaka, Penang, Sabah and Sarawak, can confer the award of Datuk, not Dato'. Some state rulers grant awards which carry titles unique to that state, such as Datuk Wira of the state of Melaka and Kedah, and Datuk Amar and Datuk Patinggi of the state of Sarawak and Datuk Seri Panglima of the state of Sabah. State awards may be revoked by the Ruler or Governor, and may be returned by the individual
haiya..nowadays Datuk title can be brought also lah.... even me also can buy haha....juz joking.. btw, i cant understand why siti nurhaliza being awarded the DATUK title.!!! she is juz singing and whats so big deal about that?? sorry, no hard feelings to anyone.
As u said, datuk-ship can be bought. Different state different price and requirement to fullfil Cant talk so much very sensitive
he was and is not an astronaut. he was just a space participant and he wasted a lot of our tax payers monies!!!!!
Oh ya about Nicol, what if there's a olympic for squash? She'll be the youngest Tan Sri la if she wins the gold. A waste that OG doesn't include Squash. bad timing. A bit side tracked.
Fake or real also the same one nowadays. Nicol David gets her Datuk-ship for her great achievement in squash. I wonder what title should the gov give to 1. Diego Maradona 2. Guus Hiddink 3. Peter Schmeichel 4. Michael Schumachel 5. Lin Dan if all the ATHLETTES above are MALAYSIAN?
Another type of datuk..the malay term for grandfather! Seriously, Datukship being given to players now..Lee Chong Wei, Nicol Ann David (squash), Tan Yee Khan..Eddy Choong before (can't remember when he got it..and given by whom..anyone can help?). Also in Athletics..M Rajamani, M Jegathesan (track and field)...apt recognition for their contributions..but should be selective. Depending on where you get it..it's spelt as Dato' (given by Agung I think) and Datuk (state level) .. correct me if I am wrong. Sometimes maybe politically motivated.
just wondering...what happen if you decline a datukship offer? and I really dont think Siti deserves her title...
Siti's husband is Datuk, so she automatically become Datin already. So, give her Datuk title will make her 'Datuk Datin Siti Nurhaliza??
she is a dato before and after her marriage ppl dont use datin at her name cos she is a dato... remember royal albert hall performance... I think she got it mainly cos of that...haizzz... like that also can get...
Weightlifter Koh Eng Tong, the first Commonwealth (Empre Games then) gold medal winner, declined the offer of Datuk.
