Canada host a Super Series? With what money? Starting badminton from grassroots... that's great, but what happens when they get good enough to compete? Oh wait, there's no money! The event was done pretty well though, but to make it a Super Series event... I'm not sure if it works so well that way. Most Super Series tournaments are paired together with another country that's fairly close by (except the SS Master Finals), so unless the USA does one, I dunno... ... oh wait... hahaha, Canada can't even host a Grand Prix right now... had to go back to International Challenge o__O
I think they are a little over ambitious at the moment with Super Series dreams. Baby steps first. If Canada can secure a GP event, that would be a great start. U.S. has secured one already so it makes sense for BWF to put one in Canada to make it worthwhile for the players to make the trek to North America. $50,000 minimum prize money for a GP event - any sponsors in sight? Let's see is Badminton Canada can capitalize on the momentum this event has generated.
This year..USA GP has been upgraded to GP Gold US$ 80000.. Yep..step by step...Canada has to secure GP first before talking abpout SS as Badminton Canada and Badminton BC for example, there is a disconnect...even Dabeka admitted that it is a mess..it seems Badminton Canada can not unite them.. Good news is Rhoca/Tenner associate will have another exhibition either in Toronto or Calgary early next year before making another one in October 10.. There is a talk to get some players to San Fransisco then Canada...lets hope and see...
Yesterday's Scores: Andre Tedjono def. Andrew Dabeka 21-17, 21-18 Taufik Hidayat def. Joachim Persson 21-11, 21-13
You are welcome, if u are interested, I can show u more pics. No, that wasn't me, I was 2 or 3 rows right behind him. But I did use a 70-200mm Canon zoom lens too
Badminton BC has done a good job this week...there are some minor things but their attention to players' need was supeb...they did try to please all fans...good job!!
Sadly, Canada will not join Sudirman cup this year due to budget. Andrew Dabeka will retire after World Championship in August then he will move to Swiss and stay there for a while with his girl friend, swiss player but Malaysia born, Xuhaina Razi.....good luck Andrew!
Hmm.. ..yeah, interested to see more, but if you could post them here (or a link), we'd all appreciate it. ..hmm, i thought the min. prize money for a GP Gold is $120,000?? Did they amend the rule and lower the min. prize money requirement??.. http://internationalbadminton.org/statues1-pdf/Part III Section 12 - Grand Prix.pdf ..if not mistaken, they used to hold the Canadian Open in conjunction with the U.S. Open not too long ago (perhaps just before the installment of the GP format). In conjunction meaning, they'd hold one tourney right after the other. I don't know if they'll hold the Canadian Open this yr or not (last yr i don't think they held one). ..if that's the case, then he better come to this yr's U.S. Open and defend his title...
Yes, Canadian and US Opens used to be back to back, but I was just making a reference to SS events. I'm not sure, but I thought that the SS events are scheduled first (aside from the BIG world events, i.e. Olympics, Worlds, etc.) then everything else follows... but anyway, they ARE hosting a Canadian International Challenge in Montreal at the end of this month, and the Canadian Open in Saskatchewan, I'm not so sure about. I think the new Canadian International in April is the one Canada is trying to keep as that date is the last week for qualifying for Worlds/Olympics
Regarding US GP Gold with US$ 80000 is a good question..it is true that US$ 120000 up is GP Gold but in BWF calendar...they mark it US as GP Gold....check it out! Andrew Dabeka will play US Open after SIN and INA Open...he just recovered from his injury...
At least it made the mainstream papers instead of the local newspaper like Richmond News/Review or the mainstream Chinese newspapers. The print edition headlines was "Racquet kings receive royal treatment at oval" compared to the online title of "Racket mania takes over Richmond Oval". The first challenge is for Badminton Canada to get organized and be supported by each of the provincial badminton associations first. There is just too much politics and self-interests going on at Badminton Canada and at Badminton BC. It was a fun event and I think if they can keep the momentum and get doubles in the mix, it should be even more interesting and entertaining. It is definitely good to see the turnout (even at 1900 folks), it is still good to see.
