if you do not wish to stay in geylang, there are budget hotels (hotel81/fragrance) at eunos/lavender area. you could take public transport from these areas to the singapore indoor stadium.

There are now many clean, well designed ,well located backpacker style places, with easy internet access, in Spore.Try www.g4station.com .They quoted S$206 for a 7-day stay but it's 8-bed dorm sharing. It's 5 mins from the MRT station and many bus options to the stadium.Check others. You are now spoilt for choice.

    Geylang Sipaku Geylang

Geylang in Singapore is such a popular place that they even have a song
    specially written in its honour:

    Geylang Sipaku Geylang

Geylang, sipaku Geylang, Geylang, si rama rama.
Pulang, marilah pulang, marilah pulang bersama-sama.
Mari pulang, marilah pulang, marilah pulang bersama-sama.

Kalu ada si jarom di patah, janganlah simpan di dalam peti.
Kalu ada silap dan salah, janganlah simpan di dalam peti.
Kalu ada silap dan salah, janganlah simpan di dalam peti.

Geylang, sipaku Geylang (Geylang!), Geylang, si rama rama.
Pulang, marilah pulang, marilah pulang bersama-sama.
Mari pulang, marilah pulang, marilah pulang bersama-sama.

Kalu ada sumor di ladang, boleh kita bertumpang mandi.
Kalu ada umur yang panjang, bolehlah kita berjumpa lagi.
Kalu ada umur yang panjang, bolehlah kita berjumpa lagi.

Geylang, sipaku Geylang (Geylang!), Geylang, si rama rama.
Pulang, marilah pulang, marilah pulang bersama-sama.
Mari Pulang, marilah pulang, marilah pulang bersama-sama

Maybe someone can do a translation of the above Malay version. :)

jason_kidd, Geylang is safe so long as you are not looking for, ahem, entertainment.

I couldn't find the meaning of sipaku too.

But if you take away 'si', paku means "nail; ferns" according to my e-dictionary.

BTW is there a meaning for 'si'?

Now how do we associate nails and ferns with Geylang?

You may be right, but we have used "Geylang" as the spelling all this while! :D
    Certainly not Gayland!
But I think there is a Gelang Patah in Johore. ;)

yes indeed paku is nail ....well to make it short it's about butterfly, return to home...hmmm...........well Indonesia uses Bahasa Baku which is 1 type of malay just like Bahasa Melayu but in Malaysia , the Malay we use for e.g..., kau dah makan? kecoh la lu & etc...while the proper way to speak is Awak sudah Makan...
