on quick lunge after a hop if the drop is fast, a step and lunge if its slow, so i can play a tight one at the net

oh for the back hand corner, i do a hitch and lunge and the length of the lunge depends on the speed and trajectory of the shuttle

Depends. If I go for a net kill, its a half step in that direction with the closer foot, then a "jump" to the kill. If it's just a normal hit, 2 steps.

15 years ago when i was still fit for singles - two to two and a half steps ;)

now - one step then dive, and watch the shuttle come back with my elbows and knees on the ground

why do the moderators not allow us to type short characters like "2.5 steps"

Ideally two steps left foot forward then right foot lunge. 3 steps if from the rearcourt right-left-right.

I believe the number of steps also has to do with the person's physical built. Surely a player who's 5'2 and a player who's 6'5 will be very different.

Yeah it depends , on the build of the player. And the opponents shot , and where you are standing.

Lots of variables - thats why badminton is so interesting :)!
