how can that be? he was just playing the Swiss Open and is slated to play the AE that starts tomorrow...
Chinese National Player at VRC Timeless was at VRC. So, he can fill us in the details. From what I was told, the gentleman was very tall and jumps on every opportunity to make an attacking clear. His backhand is awesome.
I saw him tonight. He's definitely not Chen Hong. This guy is a former Chinese National player, not a current one. I was told he's around 38 years old now. Quite tall too. Looks to be around 6 feet tall or more. Very smooth on the court. He gets to all the shots so early so it seems he barely moves. He wasn't playing against very hard competition though so I estimating he was moving and hitting at about half-2/3 speed. Would be nice to see him pull out his 'A' game against some of our best players though. I didn't get his name... was too busy studying his game. Someone mentioned that his highest world ranking was like 2nd or 3rd. As PeteLSD said, he likes to use attack clear a lot to force weak replies from his opponents. However, in an equal game I doubt he would use it nearly as much. He wasn't doing anything fancy, merely exploiting his opponents' weaknesses in movement and reply strength. He varied his shots a lot and literally hit all the corners and mids on the court. His angles and accuracy was really awesome. It was really nice to watch such game control & domination. Hope he shows up again tomorrow .
He should play some tournaments, i'm should he could attain top 5 ranking easily without being in top shape.
Wow. USTA should ask him to join the TC team (considered how easily Tony Gunawan can play for the US). US will have a line up of First single: Tony Gunawan Second single: An 38 years old former world #2 player Third single: Just pull anyone from TinTang. First double: Tony Gunawan and An 38 years old former world #2 player Second double: Kevin Han && his partner They have no chance against the big five, but to be #6 is just a piece of cake.
just for laugh, maybe those ex-nationals eventually would move up to canada. (ex. Ardy Wiranata, that 38 years old former #2)
The guy is a right hander. His opponents were simply wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy out of his league: (1) physically, they were older than him and their legs weren't strong enough; (2) technically, their drives couldn't match the former pro; (3) mentally, they were expecting huge jump smashes (they only got highly directional light smashes, drops & attack clears ); (4) tactically, . . . not a chance . . . the pro thoroughly dissected his opponents (5) # 1-4 interact with each other As a guess, there is a high probability that the guy immigrated to Canada .
Re: Chinese National Player at VRC Attacking clears are the mainstay of today's top level singles play. It is attacking clears that will eventually lead to the winning shot. This type of attacking clears is very punishing and can take a toll on your opponent. The preponderance of attacking clears in today's top singles play probably accounts for the type of body shape of the top singles players.
how do u do attacking clears? sowwie if it's out topic......but this guy does it so....i guess it's alrite 2 ask here~
Re: - Sounds about right..but looks like Chen Hong?? I'd be a little cautious about the world ranking. Sometimes the real information might be "came 2nd in World Cup" which was a different tournament. Meanings can get lost in translations!
He didn't look like Chen Hong to me. And yes, he is right handed. As far as I know he did not immigrate to Canada but is only visiting. His opponents that night were not a lot older than him. Some were around his age, some younger, some a little older. Only one person he played against that night was quite a bit older, although that person is better than all the younger players he played against that night. So age had nothing to do with it. He simply outclassed them all in every way.
