Hi, Break-My-String, I like to attend the doubles tournament. But I have not partner at this moment. Can I still involve in that ?
Don't worry about not having a partner. During the Open play, your partner will constantly change. This will be the opportunity to meet and play against other players (especially other Vancouver BFers). It is only during the Doubles Tournament is when you will be playing with the same partner. Your tournament partner will chosen through a special process, and not by you. Yes, there are spots still available for the April 4th Open House. You can either drop-in this Sunday or just follow the above instructions. Cheers!
There are still about 6 spaces left for the Collingwood's Open House. Last chance to register! PM me with your contact info. Fee is now $13. Cheers!
All spots are now filled, spectators are welcomed to cheer your favorite team! After the tourney, we'll be heading out for dinner. If you would like to join us, please leave me your name & number with Collingwood's receptionist 604-435-0323. Thanks!
How to stand when receiving a serve For those who wanted to know how or where to stand when getting ready to receive the serve, here is the pretty example :
Boy don't we look like we're doing synhcronized swimming/badminton? Haahaha! Thank goodness for the WALL! (gee it looks like I had one beer too many!) Actually, I was chasing after a shot made to the left side while I was on the right. Talk about short braking distance! I could have ended up "making a new emergency exit" Luckily, I wasn't playing in one of the middle courts otherwise it would have been Bowling For Badminton Players! Thank you! It's the first BC/BF worn on BC soil! You did a great job printing the shirts Kwun!
Thank You For Your Support! I would like to say Thank-You to all the BFer's who were playing Wood_22_chuck Bighook WWCBro Smashingbird TTT Pandhandle In the Open Play, partners were randomly drawn** for each round and points were tallied for all the player's games. At the end of the preliminary rounds, Panhandle was ranked the top player, he was the only player who won ALL HIS GAMES. The next ranking player had a distant 6 point spread. WWCbro & I were partnered for the tourny. The first round was easy but I played miserably on the second round and failed to help get WWCbro into the semi-finals. I should have just served, walked off the court, and wait for WWCbro to finish off the point. I just had too much things going in my head about the prize draw & tourny. Sorry WWCbro! Everybody brought some food to share, it was a great feast. I was not there when Wood_22_chuck brought in his spring rolls but only saw the discarded shell of a feeding frenzy. A SPECIAL THANK YOU goes out to both Panhandle representing Karakal/Domino and Philip of Flex in demo-ing their racquets and supplying some great door prizes! (I know 2 BFers came out as prize winners! ) Also, I like to thank all the BFers who came out to support the event by cheering the players on, it's always nice to put a face to a name, hey Badrad! Thanks once again! ** My original intention was to use a single draw which created a set of matches where a player will always play with a new set of players. Unfortunately with my limited mathematical & statistical knowledge, my computerized system failed after the 6th or 7th round where partners/opponents were repeated. After 8 hours & no sleep, at 7:30am I surrended to the statistics god and did my random drawn. Maybe I was too tired and could not see the pattern.
BMS, i just want to say that i admire your dedication, sacrificing your own time, energy (and the gym wall) to organize a badminton event for the badminton enthusiasts out there. without ppl like you, badminton will be a very unpopular sport. so hats off to you !
Totally agreed with Kwun and Dave, BMS' dedication to the sport sets quite a high standard for the rest of us to follow. I wished I could have half of the energy and resourcefulness he has if I ever want to set up my own club or tourney.
I went undefeated with numerous partners, but faltered in the first round of play offs. Now that I've come to the mainland twice to play you BF'ers...how about coming to the island for one? I will start a new thread. I had fun playing 5 hours of badminton...and will do it again!! Good job with the event BMS!! By the way, I was your partner when you collided into the wall!!!
How to crash into a wall "gracefully"... BMS, my thanks for organizing the tourney. It was fun and if I had a better "grip" of the concept of the Open Play, I would have definitely made it on time. All in all it was good. Nice to meet new baddies and to see some familiar faces. Yeah..too bad we lost, I figured it must kinda of hard, playing & organizing the tounrey, whilst in the midst of a match Tend to concur with BMS that it wasn't my smash (my smash is so wimpy that, it will not bowl over a styrofoam board, let alone a man of BMS stature!) It was one of those net hugging crosscourt drop that led to his "graceful crash into the wall"
