Aaron Chia, Shahrul win two titles in Challenger tourney By NG WEI LOON weiloon@thestar.com.my Photos by RAJA FAISAL HISHAN IT was a fitting finale with the well-matched men’s doubles open final at the Challenger Sports Centre badminton championships held in conjunction with the opening of the centre’s third badminton hall in Kepong on Sunday. The Challenger Badminton Academy (CBA) chief coach Liew Gavin said the contest attracted a satisfactory turnout - 58 pairs including competitive senior recreational players. “They had a good outing and produced several exciting matches over the two-day tournament at our newly set-up 19-court hall,” he added. Fight back: The eventual men’s doubles open champions Ku Boon Yann (left) and Ting Chee Kian bouncing back from a game down to stretch the encounter down to the wire. In the closely contested decider for the top position, the combination of Ting Chee Kian-Ku Boon Yann came from a game down to stretch the encounter down to the wire against Chester Chan-Mohd Rusdy Irwan. After an opening game defeat (17-21), Ting-Ku bounced back with a 21-15 win in the following game before prevailing with a nail-biting 24-22 win to wrap up the match. Easy victory: Favourite Ho Yen Mei living up to her billing in the girls’ Under-16 singles. About 300 participants including juniors in three age-groups — Under-11, Under-13 and Under-15 — took part in the recent tournament. The boys featured in both singles and doubles while the girls only competed in the Under-13 and Under-16 singles. Besides entries from the Klang Valley, the junior shuttlers came as far as Kedah, Penang and Malacca. Malacca’s Aaron Chia Teng Fong dominated the boys’ Under-13 section bagging a double in both the singles and doubles. Chia fended off the challenge of his doubles partner Pang Kee Zhen for the singles title and the duo went on to register a comfortable 21-10, 21-9 victory over Khoo Chun Yang-Jackie Ch’ng from Penang in the doubles. It was also a double joy for Shahrul Shahzwan of Selangor. He won the boys’ Under-15 and Under-17 singles.
