Tough task for Yao Lei and Shinta

Women's doubles pair have had a barren run since last year's win on home soil

    2011 Li-Ning Singapore Open

SINGAPORE - Riding on a wave of loud home support at the Singapore Indoor Stadium last year, women's doubles pair Yao Lei (back) and Shinta Mulia Sari (front) celebrated the nation's first title in the history of the badminton tournament when they defeated South Koreans Lee Hyo Jung and Kim Min Jung in the final of the Li-Ning Singapore Open.

The world No 11 pair will open their defence on Wednesday against Englishwomen Mariana Agathangelou and Heather Olver in the round of 32, and they need a good start to restore badly needed confidence.

It has not been a good season for Yao Lei and Shinta, who have not finished in the top four in any tournament since winning the super series title in Singapore last year.

In April, they were stunned by Hong Kong's unseeded pair of Tse Ying Suet and Poon Lok Yan in the last eight of the Australia Open Grand Prix Gold.

Speaking to MediaCorp before a training session at the Indoor Stadium yesterday, 21-year-old Yao Lei said: "Each country here has a strong team, and the Chinese and Japanese will be tough to beat. Our condition and performance hasn't been that good but we are recovering well and hope to get a good result.

"We may be defending champions, but there's no pressure.

"This competition is important to us, and we want to play well in front of our home crowd."

While world No 1 pair Wang Xiaoli and Yu Yang of China, the reigning All-England and Asian champions, and Taiwan's world No 2 Chien Yu Chin and Cheng Wen Hsing, have decided to give Singapore a miss, six of the world's top 10 women's doubles teams will feature at the 2011 Li-Ning Singapore Open, which boasts a total prize purse of US$200,000 (S$247,300).

Japan's Maeda Miyuki and Satoko Suetsuna (world No 3) and Mizuki Fujii and Reika Kakiiwa are in the mix, seeded 1 and 2, respectively.

Said Singapore Badminton Association (SBA) chief executive officer Bobby Lee: "Yao Lei and Shinta may be defending champions but their form has not been too good recently. Hopefully, they will get into the quarter-finals. Defending the title will be quite tough because a lot of the top players did not come last year, but they played well in last month's Sudirman Cup so we hope they can do well."

Shinta, 22, added: "This year, I'm not so satisfied with our results and we want to do better. We want to improve our ranking to top five or six."

With the qualification period for the 2012 Olympic Games running from May this year to April next year, the Singapore pair will compete in about 15 tournaments from now till next April in a bid to improve their world ranking.

The pair were included in the S$6.3 million Olympic Pathway Programme last month.

While they are likely to make the London Games, the SBA have set them a target of world No 4, for a shot at an Olympic medal.

"We have targeted quarter-final finishes for all their competitions, and then they will likely be seeded fourth for the Olympic Games. That way, they can miss all the top seeds," said Lee.

World No 26 Gu Juan sets a quarter-final target

SINGAPORE - At No 26, Gu Juan (picture) is Singapore's highest ranked player in singles in badminton.

On paper, the quarter-final target set for her by the Singapore Badminton Association (SBA) at this week's Li-Ning Singapore Open 2011 will raise eyebrows. But after her performance at the All-England Championships in March, and the kind draw, the 21-year-old has a fighting chance of making the last eight.

Said Singapore's head coach for singles, Luan Ching: "Gu Juan's draw is not too bad as she won't be meeting the top two seeds. She definitely has a chance to get into the top eight.

"The team have been through a tough process of training and they are improving. It's time to show some results."

Gu Juan broke through at the All-England in Birmingham, beating world No 8 Bae Youn Joo of South Korea en route to the quarter-finals, where she lost to Bulgaria's Petya Nedelcheva.

At the Li-Ning New Zealand International Challenge in April, she finished second after going down 2-0 to Japan's Sayaka Sato in the women's singles final. At last month's Sudirman Cup, she defeated 2009 world championship bronze medallist Pi Hongyan of France.

She will face world No 27 Ayane Kurihara of Japan in the first round on Wednesday, and if successful, she will face either Ai Goto (Japan) or seventh seed Porntip Buranaprasertsuk (Thailand) in the round of 16.

"My second round opponent will be the toughest, and it can only get more difficult after that," she said. "The All-England was a breakthrough for me and helped me gain confidence, and I hope to do well in Singapore.

"I think the last eight is achievable. I'm confident I can do it.'"

Gu Juan is the only Singaporean in the main draw of the singles event, with 14 players from the men's and women's teams competing in the qualifying rounds tomorrow. Low Lin Fhoong

World's best shuttlers face-off at Li-Ning Singapore Open

SINGAPORE: This year's Li-Ning Singapore Open has attracted some of the world's best shuttlers mainly because ranking points for Olympic qualification are at stake.

Big names competing include Olympic gold medallist Lin Dan from China and India's top women shuttler Saina Nehwal. But Malaysia's world number one male player, Lee Chong Wei is giving the Singapore event a miss.

It was a good 2010 for India's Saina Nehwal, who won three Super Series titles, including the Li-Ning Singapore Open women's singles event.

She is back to defend her title and the world number four said she is expecting a stiff challenge from Chinese players.

She said: "I am really working on my strokes, little bit more on my movement, so that I move faster against them. Because (at any point should) you move slower or you take it easy, you will lose the match. So I need to be very quick on the courts, so I am working on that speed and a lot of my strokes."

Defending men's singles champion, Sony Dwi Kuncoro from Indonesia and China's Lin Dan did not show up for the media conference on Monday. No reason was given for the Indonesian's no show, while Lin Dan cited a stomach upset for giving the media session a miss.

Last year's losing finalist in the men's singles, Boonsak Ponsana, agrees with Nehwal about the tougher competition this year. The Thai, who won the Singapore singles title in 2007, also thinks the prize money can be better to promote the sport.

Veteran Danish shuttler Peter Gade agreed and added that the Badminton World Federation can learn from the success of the Chinese.

He said: "The BWF's job is to transfer what they see and what they do with the Chinese in China to other countries. You have a huge interest for badminton. When we play in almost every country, if you have the right players, all the best players, a lot of spectators. So it should be possible."

Host Singapore's best chance lies with the women's doubles pair of Shinta Mulia Sari and Yao Lei, who are the defending champions.

With a stellar line-up of players competing this year, organisers are expecting more fans to show up. Already all 4,000 season tickets and 90 per cent of the premier seats have been sold out, even before the competition starts on Tuesday.
