Star Online Published: Monday June 9, 2014 MYT 12:00:00 AM Updated: Monday June 9, 2014 MYT 9:17:19 AM Veteran shuttler comes from behind to clinch title BY JAROD LIM PLAYING his favourable 31-point format, regular veteran shuttler Eric Chang Kim Loong was crowned the champion in the 43rd World Morning Cup Badminton Championships 2014 men’s singles 50 to 54-year-old category. Chang, who was trailing behind his opponent, a former Thomas Cup player, managed a turnaround and was neck-and-neck at the 20-point mark. “I was slightly jittery during the beginning of the match and my strokes were erratic as I knew my opponent was good. “I started to build my momentum and was able to defend well against incoming attacks,” he said. Chang managed to score five straight points to clinch a commanding lead before winning the match 31-25. “It was a satisfying match as I have shown better court performances this year. “Although the Morning Cup clashed with the All England Seniors Badminton Championships 2014, I opted for this tournament because of its point format. “The 31-format is less energy zapping than the 21-point format, which is usually played over the best of three sets,” he said. Chang proceeded to the final after beating Hong Kong player Sam Lau 31-25. The annual tournament attracted more than 8,000 participants from more than 20 countries. It had more than 140 categories ranging from Grandfather & Grandchild doubles to Triple-200 event. Playing under the MBA Malaysia team, Chang was the only player who managed to grab a gold medal for his team. Jafree Ramly and Suryati Mustapha, who played in the husband and wife 50 to 54-year-old category and former Thomas Cup player Kwek Chew Peng, who partnered Chong Mee Laing in the Combined Age- 120 Mixed Doubles, managed to grab the bronze medals in their respective categories.
That family event information looks incomplete. Is it a combined age? If so, the youngest age category is really young..*ahem*
Yes not very clear. I suppose a child who is courageous enough to wield the racket and compete will not be turned away.
