    Hi Friends,

    I recently purchased:

    Gamma X-ELS Stringing Machine
    2x Yonex Flying Clamps
    1x Generic Starting Clamp
    Bunch of generic grommets
    Bunch of Yonex strings

I'm completely new to the stringing game, and I'm trying to get some advice on whether or not it's worth it to buy a grommet removal clamp? Is it easy to remove broken/old grommets? I've seen these grommet "files" which look like needle screwdriver but textured?

I'm wondering what you guys are doing, and what's effective?

    Thanks!

if you just started stringing, don't worry about grommet removal. instead, spend your time stringing as many rackets as you can get your hands on. the learning curve is steep at the beginning and it will take a while before you get used to the flow.

I'm using a cutter to pull out all the grommets. Including the big one. It's kinda bit tricky but you'll get use to it. Tip : cut the inside and pull the grommet outside

I use a long thin screw (originally for anchoring light switch in brick wall) to which I have added a small handle.
Screw in - pull out - job done 95% of the time.
The rest I have to f##k about with like the rest of you.

Do you need to cut the grommet on the inside of the racquet first? I noticed for the shared holes, those get flared.

Yeah, you use a side cutter so you can get a flush cut on grommet to cut off the flare.

The best degrommeting tool i have seen and bought. So expensive, but still cheaper than getting the grommet files or remover. Works amazingly well.

That's a nice tool but rather expensive. You can achieve the same result with using a simple Spax screw. Screw it into the grommet a little bit just until the thread "bites" and pull out the grommet with it. You might only need to cut away the inside but of the shared grommets before pulling them. Costs close to nothing and works perfectly.

@s_mair Yeah, I use a wood-screw. I'm going to buy a sacrificial screwdriver this weekend and have a screw welded at work. It'll probably cost less than $5.

No grommet tool is cheap, sadly, but I really dropped onto one of these on ebay - listed as "stringing tools", with three awls, and I bagged it all for less than a tenner;).

I have been eyeing these up for quite some time, but they are around £35-40. I am also aware they are practically just a push pin. Would they work for shared grommets? (Nothing to push up from on the other side..).
