Thirty-two teams are bound for the Gold Coast, with entries for this year’s TOTAL BWF Sudirman Cup having closed on Tuesday. The 21 to 28 May event in Australia will culminate in the presentation of the Sudirman Cup to the winners of the World Mixed Team Championships; a battle royal which tests the all-round strength of teams each consisting of a maximum of 20 players. Defending champions China, previous runners-up Japan, and past winners Indonesia and Korea are among the prominent teams in the tournament. Participating teams will be seeded based on the world ranking of their players on Thursday 2 March and divided into four groups. Group 1 will have the top 12 teams contesting for the title; Groups 2 and 3 will have eight teams each. The remaining four teams will be in Group 4. Teams in Groups 2, 3 and 4 will compete only for overall placings and not for the title. The competition format consists of group play followed by a knockout phase. Group ties will feature all five matches (Men’s Singles, Women’s Singles, Men’s Doubles, Women’s Doubles and Mixed Doubles), but the knockout ties will be completed when a team wins three matches. There are 13 teams from Asia, ten from Europe, six from Oceania and three from Pan Am. China have won the Sudirman Cup a record ten times – including the last six editions from 2005. Korea (three titles) and Indonesia (one title) are the only other teams to have triumphed. Right, Lu Kai /Huang Yaqiong is in better form than Zheng Siwei/Chen Qingchen at the moment. Who should be Bao Yixin's partner? The current one is Yu Xiaohan. To be frank, this year's Sudirman cup campaign for Team CHN doesn't look good to me. 50-50 that she can retain the crown. CHN's WS is relatively weak. Even WD is in trouble, more vulnerable than I expected. MD has improved but not quite enough to be a safe bet. Xd is strong. MS goes without saying, double insurance in Lin Dan and Chen Long, but for team event, CL is vulnerable. I hope Chen Long use this Sudirman Cup to shake off his team event curse finally and for good, he's been unceremoniously condemned as 'Individual Dragon, Team Insect', if you know what it means. It hurts and distresses him a lot. My worry is if he tries too hard to eject that demon in him during the team championships, it might actually create so much pressure for him fighting against himself that it backfires again, thus remaining a phobia for a long time to come. It certainly takes great courage, patience, persistence and grim determination to conquer oneself - wish Chen Long all success.

Well, Zhang Nan/Fu Haifeng was a bit lucky to win the Rio Olympic gold from MAS Goh/Tan. But for badminton at such a high level, you sometimes need a bit of luck, any little things help, eg the opponent's less-than-ideal form, one of the opposing players had diarrhea a few days ago, the opponent grazed his finger, the two opposing players exchanged harsh words when one of them made too many simple mistakes, and suchlike. Had Goh/Tan won the tight match instead, we can say the same of them winning with luck. Even so, Zhang Nan is without doubt one of the greatest XD players in his partnership with Zhao Yunlei. His MD stint is relatively short but still commendable though not great, not yet. Unfortunately, post-Rio'16, Zhang Nan until now has yet to find a MD player of Fu Haifeng's caliber; similarly for his XD partnership, no one of Zhao Yunlei's prowess. I see that's what is holding him back, not so much that Zhang Nan is past it. He is still only 27 years old, born 1st March 1990, a veritable gem CBA would do well to capitalize on as much as and for as long as possible. He is definitely good for Tokyo 2020. Any other MA will be delighted to have him anytime.
Chen Yufei is overrated. She lost so many times. Just wondering why people here think she is very good? XD should be Lu Kai and Huang Yaqiong. Li Yinhui cannot be relied with Zhang Nan. Zhang Nan should pair with Bao Yixin. And what happened with Jia Yifan/Chen Qingchen. It seems they are losing before QF now.
Maybe because Li Yinhui seems most promising at first and more time is needed for them to gel. Chen Qingchen is unlikely as she is doing fine with Zheng Siwei so the coaches are reluctant to cause any disruption. Bao Yixin is apparently concentrating on WD atm when previously she was focused on XD, perhaps doing double duty is not for her. Who knows, CBA might try some new combos again and start another reshuffling after the Sudirman Cup or WC.
Chinese XD is looking very strong right now, with 2/3 very capable pairings....I can see how they would be reluctant to break up a promosing pair just to create one that might be stronger, but not necessarily so. And Zhang Nan doesnt seem to be just as dangerous with other partners than Zhao Yunlei....maybe it's a matter of them not being dangerous enough around the net, or not positioning properly for his choice of shots, or his lack of a really hard smash showing with a slightly less capable partner... Personally I think he could play very well with Cheng QC, her play style revolves much around having great vision, placing the shuttle well, and being very solid in all areas (including defense), and I think that might fit his very tactical play well. Otoh maybe she benefits more from having a speedy, hard-hitting partner, being the thinker of the two and 'augmenting' her tactical play with her partners firepower... ZN can benefit more with BYX because she is the closest to a ZYL kind of player. CQC is definitely quicker and has good vision and placement; more balanced in all areas if you like. BYX can read opponents better and is more dangerous at the net and coming forward to the net, like ZYL. I'd bet you'd have more net kills and rallies won quicker with BYX. On top of that, she has the experience advantage. If that doesn't work... maybe ZN and Li Yinhui should start sharing towels too so he could have flashbacks and play better
