When they ask me to put 27lb of tension on a racket. Is 27lb to vertical or horizontal? Because I just put 27lb to a racket and with the app stringtest it tells me that the racket has only 25lb which is what I put to the verticals.
We had this question a couple of times before. It turned out that there is no standard at this. Every stringer had his own definition of "his/her" 27 lbs. In my case it's fairly easy since I string mains and crosses at the same tension. That makes "my" 27 lbs. a tension of 27x27 lbs. All that matters in the end is that you stick to your own definition. Else your clients would get different results for the same ordered tension over time.
I usually assume that 27lbs means 27lbs mains (vertical). It makes the most sense as the crosses may have different tensions depending on whether the stringer follows yonex's guide (+2), or they choose to do +1 or square (or even -1, -2 sometimes but this shouldn't happen unless you ask for it). No matter what, the mains should be used to identify with your specified string tension. However, as s_mair has said, it really does depend on your stringer. You could get anywhere from 25x27 to 27x29 and anything in between. Best to ask your stringer what he does when you specify just a single tension, and if you're the stringer then you should just make it clear to the customer what you define as 27lbs.
I take 27 as the intended end product, so the crosses. And as I do +1 the mains will be 26 and should end up around 27 on my machine, since the woven crosses will tighten the mains.
If someone wants 22lbs then the tension should end up being 22lbs. 22x22 = 22? 20x22 = ? 21x23 = ? 22x24 = ?
