It's normal, human nature I guess, to get carried away by the moment.

In the final, Anthony Ginting just beat Momota in two straight sets, a close affair, very well-fought,but AG came from behind to take G2, thats' telling, to me, as I expected a decider.

    You're spot on about Ginting.

Nah, there's no fight, he is a very good student, the coaches like him a lot, it's just his own problem, mentally weak, low in self-confidence and lacking inner belief. Hopefully, as he matures, he outgrows it.

Actually, in that match with Momota in G2, he displayed the kind of game he is capable of to take on any opponent, but the spirit is not there all the way. My fear is that he might end up another wasted talent.

Should be a interesting final, looking forward to it.

As regards to KM, i think he's got more explosive, his hand/racket speed is amazing, its akin to doubles play at times,
his disguises are insane, the angle he creates is unreal and so consistent, is it a left hander thing,
i think i heard somewhere due to he way shuttles are made, left handers have an advantage when it comes to slicing/disguise of the shuttle,
maybe technically advance members here can shed some light on this theory,
on top of that, even when he's in scampering retrieving mode when his opponents seems to momentarily get the upper hand,
whats coming back at them is not a easy kill, it barely skims the net.

I'd go with that, but showing flashes in middle part of a set is not gonna do it,
if SYQ is the best we have of challenging KM, i'm afraid it's a ''what now my love'' crunch time in the Chinese camp.

Sun Jun has spoken up for Shi Yuqi after his indifferent form of late, slumping to a R1 exit at the JPN Open. In accepting an interview with a Peng Pai journalist, SJ was candid, saying:" After the Thomas Cup and the World Championships, Shi Yuqi was mentally jaded, moreover his muscles and bones develop pus, and his knee was quite painful, that's an important reason for his drop in form."

He went on to reveal that Shi Yuqi was already carrying some injury during the Nanjing World Championships, " but he still has to compete despite struggling to stay focused, and feeling edgy when not playing well."

He added, " His injury has all along not been alleviated and he's taking anti-inflammatory drugs, taking painkillers whenever the pain gets worse. During the WC when the pain was at its worst, it would wake him up from his sleep, what's more, there was no better form of treatment then, making him feel miserable."

Sun Jun further said, what's most effective way is to have more rest but in view of the crowded tournament schedule, that's very difficult to do.

" His injury problem requires rest to bring relief to the pain but right now he neither dare take it easy nor put training on hold, therefore rather contradictory."

No wonder Shi Yuqi after his R1 loss at the JPN Open and before the start of the home CHN Open, he hinted to the reporters that he wasn't in good condition without elaborating, probably so as not to reveal too much to his opponents.

Let's see how performs next month after a much-needed break.

According to the above report, Shi Yuqi originally had some knee problem which was healing before the French Open. But , unfortunately, during the French Open (not sure at which round), he sustained some muscle (tendon) strain around his right thigh, buttocks and waist, a new injury that affected his performance at the ongoing Fuzhou China Open as the tournament wears on, especially today in his semifinals match with Chou Tien Chen.

This piece of information was divulged by Sun Jun who couldn't help himself from speaking to the reporter who earlier had asked Shi Yuqi about it but he was not forthcoming, only saying his poor showing today against Chou Tien Chen was partly due to injuries without elaborating and partly to his own mentality issue (caused by the new injury). Remember, in the match he took a medical timeout.

Sun Jun was there at the Fuzhou China Open not as an ad hoc coach this time (he was at the August Nanjing World Championships) but in his own capacity purely out of concern for Shi Yuqi's progress. Post-match, he had a private discussion with SYQ to earnestly analyse the causes of his disappointing defeat to Chou Tien Chen today.

That's also why SYQ earlier said he just needed more rest time to fully treat his injuries which he has not been able to due to the crowded tournament schedule required by BWF for the top 15 players.

[I guess SYQ was reluctant to reveal too much about his injuries as, like what Li Xuerui used to say before, it's totally pointless as your opponents aren't going to give you any quarters or sympathise with you as their duty is to beat you on the court - Justin]

That means the Ginting match probably aggravated Shi Yuqi's new injury.

Chinese players needs to train hard/smart & make their body agile and flexible so that they are injury free while they go through the gruelling tournament schedule across the globe .
Indian players are very strong in terms of remaining Injury free.. Saina N has played through 3 WS generations of Chinese players who played got injured-retired.. Saina N still continues.. likewise in MS Srikanth/HS and other key players continue to play while Chinese players get plagued with Injuries.. Looks like SYQ and CL are both out. Only good part is LD coming strong even at 35+, one has to be like him.. he played so many back to back tournaments rarely heard him being injured.
Likewise Japanese, Indonesian & Korean players do their best to remain injury free.. its an art that Chinese players need to master & learn.

Frankly, I dislike Shi Yuqi's body language most of the time, just not positive enough,I could sense his defeatist attitude as when he lost to Lee C W, K Momota, and Chou Tien Chen, whether he was affected by some injury or not.

The only time he appeared gung-ho was when he played his countrymen, esp Lin Dan and Chen Long. Can't blame some of the Chinese netizens for slamming him on that ground.

But, today, at the Guangzhou WTF against Son Wan Ho, Shi Yuqi looked on the way out before the second half of G2 that I thought he is at it again, but to my surprise, he re-energized himself at just the right time to save G2 and even ran away with the decider. That's good to see, let's hope it's a sign of maturity and not just an isolated case.

Personally, I believe Shi Yuqi do have the game to take on the very best in the pro circuit, what's lacking is the mental toughness, the self-confidence, the fighting spirit , the inner belief that he can do it.

Marvellous job, Shi Yuqi. Congratulations for ending the year with a bang, winning the grand finale World Tour Finals 2018 !

What a masterclass performance by Shi Yuqi the way he beat the reigning world champion and hotshot world ranked number one, Kento Momota, in commanding fashion and style, 21-12 and 21-11. Can't get any better than that.

A video speaks a million words, so watch the match and let it speak for itself (for those who miss the live TV broadcast, apart from the blessed spectators at Tianhe Gymnasium) :

On the final day of the World Tour Finals, Shi Yuqi's greatly respected teacher, Sun Jun, rushed from Nanjing to Guangzhou by flight to watch his disciple's match and cheer him on. Right away after the match, Sina Sports interviewed Sun Jun and he gave his views of Shi Yuqi's progress.

As Sun Jun sees it, Shi Yuqi's victory today (the final) can be attributed to two factors, firstly, mentality, " Shi Yuqi has a mind to target Momota, after losing a few times to him previously, he's mentally a little humbled. Today he dares to win, confidence stronger than before, mentally better prepared."

Secondly, Shi Yuqi's tactical movement is appropriate, limiting his opponent's attack, " He was more patient on court, while playing clears and dropshots, he would suddenly inject pace, and he also played with better accuracy today. On the whole, Momota was reduced to passivity, he didn't gain many points in the two sets. Shi Yuqi was very proactive, played a more all-round game, that's a breakthrough for him."

This is Shi Yuqi's fourth meeting with his opponent this year, the first three ended in defeat, this time he was able to prevail over his opponent. Sun Jun believed Shi Yuq has made obvious progress during this period, " Just from this match alone, we can see Shi Yuqi has improved a lot. Four months ago at the World Championships, he lost 0 - 2, at that time Shi Yuqi was not sufficiently all-round, in today's match, Shi Yuqi played a very well-rounded game. Still we have to see his mentality at every match, however, after his victory today, I am convinced Shi Yuqi will become mentally stronger, even more self-confident."

To Shi Yuqi, Sun Jun is a greatly respected teacher, Sun Jun is the most important coach who helped him laid a solid foundation in technical skills. Sun Jun watched Shi Yuqi grow up step by step, being able to see him win the championship, he is naturally very happy and comforted. " Shi Yuqi is a bright child, especially on court he appeared quite smart, more intelligent."

Sun Jun went on to divulge, Shi Yuqi, nowadays, whether in his private life or on court, is already more mature than before, " He is rather fond of playing 抖音- THE TIK TOK OF CHINA [not sure what that is, maybe an online game - Justin L]. In the past, he would often engage in tit for tat with netizens and fans online, to give vent to his frustrations and let off some steam. When fans scolded him for playing badly, he would even retaliate and get into a heated exchange with them. On this matter I've told him off, that his behaviour made him look immature. He is much better now, proving he's more mature than before, we can see that on court as well."

The day Shi Yuqi matures and be confident of himself, is the day he will win the big one.
Even Lin Dan and Chen Long fails in their early hurdles, before completely overwriting the history.
He is promising and hopefully he can play confidently and intelligently in 2019.

It’s a short video app which is hugely popular.

It was really clear that Shi was mentally prepared to out rally Momota in this final and sometimes change pace with the smash whereas in his previous matches, Shi was trying to create something out of nothing with his smash and losing on the drawn out rallies.

    As @Cheung mentioned above, it's http://www.douyin.com/
TikTok is the international brand market for Douyin.

That was a huge surprise for Momota himself.

How can you change from Shu into Shi this time? :D

Shi YQ convincing victory over Kento Momota certainly draws massive attention in China after Tao Tian Xian Dou had dominated centre stage, starting from April 2018 this year when bagged Asian Championships in Wuhan. The question is how consistent Shi in next tournaments? The mindset and mental strength are the key factor since the Chinese has really well-improved technical skill.

Lin Dan won All England 2004 in 20 years old and helped CHN to reclaim Thomas Cup 2004 as first MS, he's much better than Shi Yuqi in tender age.
