A well deserved victory for Marin. And what a wonderful comeback. I was doubting whether she could play at the same level she did before her injury but in this tournament, she was playing at least her best level, if not better. Having said that, I wonder why her coaches gave her the go ahead to play 100%. She just returned from an injury so I thought her coaches would have told her to play 80% or perhaps at most, 90%, to protect her from a possible reinjury. I think the priority for Carolina is to keep herself healthy and free from injury, and then do her usual focused preparation before the 2020 Olympics. Honestly, if Carolina wins a few SS here and there before the Olympics, that's not such a big deal. But if she wins the next Olympics, she may well go down as the most successful woman's player in WS ever.
There will always be more inconsistency in the game of an (all out) attacking player. For Ginting to become more consistent he would have to drop on the aggressiveness and attacks.
The field is stacked in WS. She can't show up at 100% only for the Olympic and hope to be gold medalist. She has got to gain that confidence first in the pre-olympic phase and show her opponents she is there.
Ginting vs Momota match is so much more exciting when its played in Final. If they have met in QF/SF and Ginting won, it doesnt mean he will win the title anyway. Makes for such a good spectacle. Its hard to beat WR1 and end up winning the title anyway (like HYX & JC)
Another superb match..kudos to both KM and ASG.. well played! Hope the excitement continue in WD and MD
A bit more controlled. He attacked a lot but not all out like Ginting. Was LCW as consistent as a player like KM?
Carolina Marin did just that at the 2018 WC. She just showed up and won it (of course she did special preparation for the 2018 WC with her coach). If you checked her performance before the 2018 WC, Carolina looked to be struggling and wasn't really winning that much on the SS circuit. Of course the field is stacked in WS. Having said that, if Carolina can keep healthy, I would put her as a top 3 favorite to win the Olympics in 2020.
Ginting's inconsistency is not caused by his aggressiveness. He makes too many basic unforced mistakes like hitting the nets, long/wide shots etc. Just look at his last shot. What a mistake to make after a pretty stellar performance in previous rallies. Or hitting the shuttle way wide when half the court was pretty much open
I must say the umpire in the ASG - KM match did the right thing to allow Ginting to challenge the linecall as he thought it was in when the line judge called it out. Good that the umpire didn't overrule Ginting by claiming it's too late. Thumbs up to him.
Not really. Lin Dan at the 2008 Olympics was attacking in the finals against LCW. But LD was also consistent. Actually, if you watch LD play LCW before 2012, LD played many aggressive matches against LCW. It was after 2012 that LD started to get defensive and become a rally player.
Not a direct result of the attacks but by attacking all out almost all the time he tires himself faster and the second or third sets are always full of mistakes such as the last shot you mentioned.
Last 2 SS , Ginting lost to Momota. cant say anything about conversion on that front 5 Finals , 3 titles now. Good or bad at his stage of careers?
Indeed, amazing comeback tournament for Marin. That's partly why I thought her injury wasn't as serious as LXR's. Anyway, with the kind of form Marin is in now and going forward, I'm not so sure anymore Sindhu at Tokyo2020 is the clear favourite. Personally, at this moment (the situation may change nearer to the Olympics), I count Marin, Sindhu, Tai TY, Chen Yufei , and Akane Yamaguchi (despite her current injury woes) as the main contenders, not in any order.
