I wonder if there's gonna be any international tournament this year.
Surprisingly, the French Open (supposedly at the end of October) has started to sell tickets,
but up to only 50% of the capacity.

I wonder whether the BWF seriously had consulted with member associations before publishing the revised calendar ?

When I saw the calendar, I thought it was a decision made in haste and was totally unplanned. The bwf must have been in their own virtual world. They were putting players' lives at risk. So many players expressed discontent.

Cancellation of events was inevitable. I don't have any hope from them and I think we have to bear with their ludicrous decisions in future too.

I think BWF revised calendar is just temporary calendar because none can predict what will occur in future months amid the uncertainty of this pandemic but yeah they only offer fake hope for badminton fans to wait tournament restarted :D
So far only TUC has positive sign to go as planned.

No credible information so far, looks like bleak prospect. M/Q Report is slated to be released next week.

I am afraid international badminton will be doomed after this pandemic (in 5 years time)
Athlete's life (independent mostly) is shown to be extremely uncertain

Young children will think a thousand times to go to badminton
Only those from powerhouse countries with government support will be able to thrive, such as Indonesia, China, India, possibly Korea and Japan
This won't be enough to gain support internationally

The prospect looks bleak and unpromising, highly likely the number of international tournaments will be trimmed after 2021.

As predicted earlier due to the resurgence of this pandemic, four tournaments will be called off on September calendar.

Further to our update of 23 July, and in light of the ongoing developments surrounding the spread of COVID-19 the Badminton World Federation (BWF) announces that the following tournaments have been cancelled, in consultation with the relevant hosts.

    Cancelled Tournaments
    • YONEX Taipei Open 2020 (01-06 September)
    • Korea Open (08-13 September)
    • VICTOR China Open (15-20 September)
    • DAIHATSU YONEX Japan Open (22-27 September)
BWF Secretary General Thomas Lund said: “These decisions to cancel tournaments are made in the best interest of the health of the players, spectators, volunteers and Member Associations. We are deeply disappointed to have to cancel tournaments, but feel that the well-being of everyone involved is most important at this time.”

    =============================================
*In the cancellation of September BWF World Tour, CBA will conduct China Badminton Super League in August, BAM will organize internal competition in near time meanwhile PBSI plans to hold TUC simulation on September.

i can't imagine any tournaments happening in the remainder of 2020. which host/organizers/member associations can afford to pay all of the typical hosting expenses and not expect any return from ticket sales/food concessions/advertising sales/broadcast rights? normal attendance is small to begin with but at least it was something.

basically bwf wants to have tournaments, but, who is willing to lose (more) money and help them out?

And the prospect will turn bleak after 2021, highly likely HSBC will not extend the four-year contract for BWF rebranded World Tour.

BWF Announces Adjusted Tournament Calendar for 2020
    27 August, 2020

    TEXT BY BWF STAFF

BWF ANNOUNCES ADJUSTED HSBC BWF WORLD TOUR FOR 2020; TOTAL BWF THOMAS & UBER CUP FINALS TO GO AHEAD

The Badminton World Federation (BWF) will implement an adjusted tournament calendar for the HSBC BWF World Tour in 2020.

Given the ongoing COVID-19 situation, our main concern is to ensure the health and safety of all personnel participating in planned international tournaments.

We are confident in creating a safe environment around all HSBC BWF World Tour tournaments, however, the main challenge with the existing tournament calendar is our capacity to move participants between different territories where different entry and safety restrictions apply.

Therefore, in light of the exceptional circumstances we find ourselves in, an adjusted tournament calendar has been developed to replace the present HSBC BWF World Tour tournament locations and dates.

In addition, the TOTAL BWF Thomas & Uber Cup Finals 2020 in Aarhus, Denmark will remain part of the international tournament calendar and will proceed on the planned dates of 3-11 October 2020.

Thus, following the completion of the TOTAL BWF Thomas and Uber Cup Finals in Weeks 40 and 41 of the tournament calendar, the HSBC BWF World Tour will resume with a two-week European leg in Odense, Denmark to be staged across Weeks 42 and 43.

Both of these tournaments – DANISA Denmark Open I and Denmark Open II – will be Super 750 events.

There will then be a two-week transition time to move the tour and all participants to Asia safely – factoring in the necessary quarantine period – for two Super 1000 tournaments in Weeks 46 and 47, and culminating with the HSBC BWF World Tour Finals in Week 48.

The locations of the three Asian leg tournaments are yet to be announced.

All remaining HSBC BWF World Tour tournaments on the calendar will no longer take place at the dates and locations originally listed.

    ========================================================

“We look forward to the return of international badminton and we thank all parties and participants involved in the planning process.”

Tournaments completed in 2020 will accumulate world ranking points, although such points will only be included with the unfreezing of the World Rankings.

The exact model for the unfreezing of the World Rankings, and how subsequent rankings are structured and valued, will be released shortly.

    ________

Well, hard to believe there'll be BWF World Tour Finals where only few tournament that have been completed in 2020, quite weird decision:rolleyes:

Jakarta?? The confirmed case is still high steadily (due to low discipline and various factor) and keep soaring in coming months. I have no imagination at all about those Asian leg will be held in INA, far from ideal condition:(
Japan might be the other potential host.

Indonesia set to host Asian leg of badminton Tour
    Tuesday, 01 Sep 2020
    https://www.thestar.com.my/sport/ba...nesia-set-to-host-asian-leg-of-badminton-tour

PETALING JAYA: With Malaysia out of the running with its borders closed, the All-Indonesia Badminton Association (PBSI) have hinted that they could host the two proposed Badminton World Federation (BWF) World Tour legs in Asia in November.

In the revised World Tour calendar released last Friday, the BWF listed Asia Open 1 (Nov 10-15) and Asia Open 2 (Nov 17-22), both with a US$1mil (RM4.17mil) prize purse, as among the five tournaments to salvage the circuit which was suspended since the completion of the All-England in mid-March.

While Denmark will hosts the first two legs next month, the destination for the two legs in Asia, as well as the season-ending World Tour Finals in December, have yet to be determined.

    ===========================================

While the country to host the two Asian stops still remains a guessing game, PBSI secretary-general Achmad Budiharto’s revelation on its official site may have shed some light on the final destination of the Tour’s two legs,

Achmad said there was a possibility for Indonesia to play host to the two tournaments and that PBSI would have further discussions with BWF.

“The series (of tournaments) in Asia might be in Indonesia, (however) there are many things that need to be discussed because it is quite a complicated issue, ” said Achmad.

“There’s already a green light from the government for sporting events to be held in in Indonesia, but with a Covid-19 (safety) protocol in place because the main concern is about the safety of athletes and other stakeholders, ” he added.

Besides Malaysia, China are also out of the picture because of their government restriction and financial reasons, so badminton-crazy Indonesia looks like a viable candidate for the job.

It is highly unlikely that there’s any other country willing to source for the kind of corporate sponsorship needed to finance the two events with purses of US$1mil each in these difficult times.

The only question that remains is: Can Indonesia guarantee the safety of health and well-being of the entourage travelling into the country, as it continues to report surge in Covid-19 cases. About 2,700 cases were reported yesterday alone.
    _________

This is so absurd and insane, how come the country which grappling to contain COVID-19 and going into economic recession has desire to host sport event that offering second most lucrative prize money?

Unfortunately SGP has no big interest to stage these back to back Asia Open.
BWF insists to restart World Tour where almost none (maybe only INA) want to host top-tier event, this kind of situation/case reminds me about 2018 Asian Games host.

you need a bubble. one single bubble. it ain't rocket science.

2 mini bubbles — denmark moving to china or indonesia — will not work. every location move invites more risk.
