1 seems to be the European school that says pronate, pronate all the way.

Other seems to be this school of Coach Lee who show smash method slightly different (not pronating all the way)

    Which is the 'right' way?

For me, just focusing on the right grip for each shots and the pronation comes naturally.

No it's not two schools on different continents.

Some of his videos he gives some views that are controversial and just his own.

In this video he doesn't say anything controversial.. this video is probably a response to people saying that earlier videos he did were controversial! (though he still disabled comments on that video, so bear that in mind).

But you can listen to what he is saying in that video. it's not what you write in your post.

He's saying don't do it exaggerated like crazy and he shows it done like crazy.

And he says there are more important things. And that's true.

You can have technique that isn't "beautiful" but that beats people.

Some complexity, is that there are subtle differences between coaches.. sometimes older players do less pronation, and younger players do more.. There are some grips that will involve more pronation than other grips. Some teach different degrees of forehand grip, depending on where the shuttle is. If you used a 100% forehand grip, then you'd have to use pronation.

But the general message of his video to not think so much about pronation is often something you'd hear anywhere in the world.

LJB is really being extra non-controversial in this video!

Coaches all over the world tend to model their ideals for pro play, by the top pro players. Hence, you don't get different schools of thought re technique based on country, because what works proves itself.. So somebody in France, or somebody from Japan, watches Momoto and says "wow that's how you play Badminton"

Agree, coach Lee is an excellent coach to start with, but sometime there are some innacuracies, like when he said you shouldn't give privilege to your backhand in double defence.

Pronation should come "naturally", the whole power for shots come from you arm and ideally your whole body, focusing on pronation will only make the shuttle fly from your wrist power which is very little compared to you full body
