Lack of foreign participant, the unranked home players snatch the chance.

A minor upset in WS opening round, Zhang Yiman who stole attention recently since Huelva World Championships late last year lost to Lauren Lam. The aggressive and upbeat US teen beat the lethargic Chinese, contrast gesture between these two players, injury or inconsistency problem perhaps is the reason to explain this unexpected result.

Interesting meeting of two youngsters from same generation, Li SF-Naraoka in second round after both players fought hard to clear first round hurdle, they have no killer attacking shots, mostly relying on defense and endurance. Their junior peers Sen and Vitidsarn have stamped mark in BWF top-tier tours regularly.

Zhang Nan and Liu Cheng lost to Lee Yong Dae and his young partner in he first round (his first senior BWF tournament btw)...

Looking forward to see LYD play KGJ/KSR, used to be entertaining matches back in the day.

In the bottom half of MD KSH/SBC should have a very good chance to go far, with only youngsters, Liu/Ou and ChoiSG/KimDK in their path.

Would be fitting to have LYD or KGJ/KSR vs KSH/SBC in the final

I wish the korean independent players would participate in more tournaments and not juz the korea ones.

It could be due to lack of finances that they are unable to participate in more tournaments?

If that’s the reason, then it’s really sad. I mean players go independent to have more freedom right but if u dun go to bigger tournaments, ur career is going to be stagnant and u can never improve your world rankings and win big titles.

Don’t they have sponsors to help? Like almost all the Malaysian independent players are playing in all the big international tournaments.

prize money in badminton is so low being independent is not cost effective for 99% of the athletes.
...and if they don't win immediately &/or consistently they will lose those sponsors.

Sponsors?. In this pandemic period, even sponsors need Sponsors to survive. Their situation is very critical.

Interesting result. Burmese player defeated Li Michele. I never ever knew that there is a player of international standard from Myanmar playing Tournaments. Good for her.

I'm inclined to go with the latter as Michelle Li has been losing matches she's supposed to win these days. She keeps crashing out in the early rounds.

None is being favorite in MS category, interesting to wait whether former world number one Son WH could go further. Weng HY who created sensational run in Suncheon got trouble surprisingly to overcome Algerian player in first game meanwhile Zhao JP was unable to clear the unheralded home player Kim DH in three games, stagnant mode for long time. CHN has selected two low-ranked players to replace Zhao & Lu for upcoming Badminton Asia Championships (S1000) end of this month.

A headline result recorded by Myanmar WR #82 Thet Htar Thuzar player to beat established name Michelle Li, back to back first round exit for the Canadian veteran in Korea tour. A contrast result displayed by Chochuwong, being runner-up of Korea Open but crashed out prematurely here in Gwangju, the scoreline pointing out her off-color performance against Asuka Takahashi. One of title contenders, He Bingjiao had slow started that involving basic errors and monotonous strokes before she regrouped in next two games with more creative shots, various pattern and accuracy to outmaneuver Jeon Jui, another home player standing next, Kim Ga Eun who stunned Chen YF last week

Two INA MD combinations sent packing simultaneously in tight contest, learning process to gain competing experience particularly in crucial stages for the youngsters Pram/Yere also former World Junior Champs Leo/Daniel. All England champs Bagas/Fikri will take China test in last sixteen, Ren XY/Tan Q tomorrow.

WHY is good, but is not quite there yet among the top 15, no thanks to his hiatus from competition because of the pandemic. He had a good draw in the Korean Open. Heo Kwanghee had not been playing well since the Olympics. Cheam Junwei, Ng Tse Yong and Sevendsen are players in his (WHY) class. In the finals he was overawed by JC's reputation in the first game, couldn't get a feel of JC's game and couldn't get going at all. He played his way back in the 2nd game and was able to match JC's game before JC went 19-16 up. At that point I thought he was going to lose when he suddenly made his own luck and romped home 5 straight points to win the game, He became more confident in the third game when he realised that he had a chance and was performing at his smashing and retrieving best. I expected him to win by the half-way stage of the decider.

Now that he had won the Korean Open title he has to shoulder the expectations of his fans . The pressure will be on him now to win the Master's title as well. Let's see how he progresses in this tournament.
