    Hey guys,

I'm 16 years old, and play first seed in my fourth year of high school. My footwork is pretty good but is always getting better.

I wanted to know. There was this one situation where I had cleared and then my opponent attempted a drop but it went a little too high. I approached to the net, but for a couple of seconds, watched the bird land as I did an underhand clear to a corner. The bird was not, however, high enough for me to accumulate a smash.

If I have so much time to prepare for a shot, what kind of shot should I use? Should I practice preparing for trick shots? How can I set up a smash with an underhand shot?

well if you had so much time, i recommed you do a fake shot, make it look like it hitting it hard then drop or vice versa, or since you have time look for an area where it is currently hard for ur oppenent to get to, it'll be better if its his backhand also

Well, you had a lot of time but you did, in fact, arrive after the shuttle had dropped below the net tape? If it is at all above the tape, then even if you can't "smash" it, you should still be able to execute an effective, offensive knock-off at the net. For that, you often need to modify your grip somewhat so that you can hold the racquet parallel to the net to avoid a fault.

Alternatively, let's assume that the shuttle had fallen below the tape by the time you arrived. You can still make a fast push if you get your whole body low enough. Obviously, the shuttle will have to travel upwards slightly to get over the net but if you're early enough you can get it almost flat and very fast.

In any case, being their early gives you the advantage of taking a peek at what your opponent is doing. If your opponent stays back, tumbling a net shot might be most effective. If the opponent rushes to the side of the net at which you are retrieving the drop, you can either cross your net shot to the opposite side or pop a quick, low lift over your opponent's head causing him/her to backpedal to retrieve it.

The earlier you arrive, the more options you have.

instead of clearing it u should have either dropped it or tapped it downward becuz if u clear it ur juss hitting it right back to ur opponent and ur opponent wont have to run much. the objective is to tire out ur opponent and if u hit right back to your opponent, they wont be very tired

For some reason, I always find myself smiling when someone like you comes up and talks about how he or she is improving! I see myself back when I was about 17 years old and also improving my game. I really hope you keep it up and improve even more. I am also very pleased with your attitude of wanting to learn more everytime. ;)

About your shot, the basic idea is to get to the shuttle the earliest possible. The sooner you get there, the better because you get more choices of shots you can pull off! In this case, you can do the following:

    1. Brush or do a drive (aim for your opponent's chest so he has a hard time returning it as the brush/drive happens quite fast)

    2. Come up to the shuttle with your racquet head up like you intend to push the shuttle to the back of the court then, just as you're about to touch the shuttle, pull the racquet back about 20 degrees and drop the shuttle at the net. Or,

    3. Hold your racquet up like you're about to do a drop at the net then, pull back and do a clear.

Yes, 2 and 3 are basically deceptive shots. I'm sure you can pull all these shots and if not yet, I'm sure you're disciplined enough to practice them anyway! Just do your thing and have fun!:)

As long as your feet are on the ground, I don't think you can get to the shuttle too early!!
Did you reach it when it was above net height?
