Doubles specialist Boon Heong living up to his 'Braveheart' tag By RAJES PAUL They don't call Tan Boon Heong “Braveheart” for nothing. The 20-year-old, who hit the headlines when he was picked to partner Koo Kien Keat at the Asian Games when Chan Chong Ming was dropped, fears no one. It was that fearlessness that brought the scratch pair of Kien Keat-Boon Heong gold medal at the Doha Games. And it is with this same fearlessness that he is facing his debut at the All-England. The lanky Boon Heong said he would not be intimidated by any of his rivals. “I am still young. I do not worry about my opponents no matter who they are. It has been my style of play from my junior days - I do not fear anyone,” he declared. “I just go into a match with nothing to lose. It is great if I win and too bad if I lose. But I do not cave in easily.” At the All-England, Boon Heong-Kien Keat will take on Indonesia's Sigit Budiarto-Fran Kurniawan in the first round. If they pass the hurdle, two other Indonesians stand in their way to the semi-finals. They are expected to square off with Alven Yulianto-Luluk Hadiyanto and Markis Kido-Hendra Setiawan in the second round and quarter-finals respectively. “We have played against them (the pair defeated both the Indonesian pairs en route to the Asiad gold). They know our game well. Markis-Hendra have better results and are more experienced now. It will be another battle in our hands but we will be ready,” he said. Awesome: Tan Boon Heong (left) and Koo Kien Keat showed theirmettle by winning the Asian Games gold medal. Now they are eyeing the All-England men’s doubles title. If they overcome the Indonesian obstacles, they will likely meet second seeds Jens Eriksen-Martin Lundgaard Hansen of Denmark in the last four. Rather than worrying about his opponents, Boon Heong is working on his own speed and fitness. “Compared to last year, my speed and fitness has improved. It has been a great journey with Kien Keat so far. We now have a world ranking (32nd and they are seeded eighth in the All-England). Surely, we will be out to continue with our good showing,” he added. Rexy recalled the days when he identified Boon Heong as the potential player. “I saw something special in him when he was training. He was a powerful player and he never bothered about who he was going to play or partner. All we had to do was to strengthen his upper body and motivate him,” said Rexy. “And now, the world can see that he has more speed in his game and his smashes are powerful. But we did not have to work so much on his mental game - he was already strong. “He is just like me - he does not fear anyone on the court,” he said. And just like Rexy, Boon Heong has won the Asian Games gold. Rexy also won the Olympics gold medal, along with the All-England title and the world title. Boon Heong can make it two out of four if he wins in Birmingham.
Rexy likes TBH from the very first day. That's why he picked him to participate in last year Thomas Cup. TBH is indeed a potential player.
Ya...From the news rexy said that TBH is similiar to him that have no fear to anyone,i can see that rexy likes him very much...
Congratulation on TBH today he really play well.Keep up momentum. Now i can saw he smilling.Nice.Never seen he smilling on court b4.Congratulation!!!i Love TBH smile ,he look cute.
TBH indeed has a special style of play. He is calm, confident and cool on court. But he shows great emotions after winning every point. I like to see him shout and celebrate every point. The best part is the way the celebrates after winning AE. Rexy jumps and hug TBH.. Too happy indeed.. That is his best birthday present..
Not only he makes female's feet tremble, he melts all badminton fans in this world, especially Malaysia. We are proud to have this young hero in Malaysia. Hope he continues to tremble your feet and melt your heart in the future...
Only 20 , and already an AE-winner. That's very impressive. KKK/TBH are very good when it comes to the tactics, they move smoothly round the court with a good communication. I quite like this couple.
Most importantly, he must maintain a good friendship with KKK.. Some strong pairs perform badly when their freindship turns bad.. Hope all of you get what i mean.. If nothing goes wrong between them, I am confident they will be able to win more title in the future..
I'll think TBH is good while partnering KKK,TBH is just cool and innocent guy while KKK is more aggresive and seem more fire in him while in court.TBH can cool down KKK a little bit if he got tension or low spirit.Agree wif jack, hope they maintain this relationship.Oh boy seem i really like this TBH
I thought all pairs have good relationships...... who doesn't??? Rexy was really happy. He kept signalling them to focus when they got the match point for the second game...........it sure helped!
thanks ixory for agreeing with me.. hmm.. if not mistaken, i shall explain now.. Cheah Soon Kit-Yap Kim Hock had a bad relationship.. tat's y they are always runner-up to Rexy-Ricky.. Cheah Soon Kit-Choong Tan Fook had a REALLY bad relationship for a short period of partnership.. Choong Tan Fook threaten to break the partnership at tat time but BAM refuses.. Next CTF-LWW also had bad relationship and they lost in early rounds to unknown players.. I'm glad CTF-LWW are ok now.. So, i hope KKK/TBH maintain their good relationship and be true champions like Rexy-Ricky..
