Smashing islander

AN island boy who has yet to master the sea.

Khoo Chung Chiat knows of his `flaw' but would rather spend his time
practising his racquet skills rather than master ing the art of
floating in water.

"Many people are sur prised when they find out I can't really swim
even though I'm from Langkawi," said Chung Chiat, 21.

"I guess they expect me to be a good swimmer since I stay in the
coun try's most popular island. Yet, I'm not much of a sea freak and
prefer walking along the beach instead."

The former Bukit Jalil Sports School student takes every step
seriously in the court.

Partnering Mohd Razif Latif in the men's doubles, the duo hit
headlines earlier this month after stunning world No 10 pair
Indonesians Alven Yuli anto-Luluk Hadiyanto 10-21, 21-16, 21-16 in
the first round of the Ma cau Open.

Their journey was cut short after losing to vet eran pair Choong Tan
Fook-Lee Wan Wah in the quarter-finals of the Ma cau meet.
"We were really in form during the match and the Indonesians were
caught off guard. We were clearly the better players," said Chung
Chiat on beating Yulianto and Hadiyanto.

Chung Chiat and Razif are hoping to continue performing upsets as
they gear up for their debut outing in the Korat SEA Games this
December.

"It's not going to be easy with the Indonesians coming in full
force. But Razif works well with me and he creates opportun ities
for us to gain points."

"If things go our way, we might make it to the quarter-finals
without much problem."

With the full backing from his family, Chung Chiat, a third child
out of four siblings, hopes his combination with Razif would
continue Malaysia's dominance in the scene.

"I make sure I call my parents after the match. They've been really
supportive and I hope to repay them soon."

 

how does he get good training in langkawi? Maybe he goes to the mainland for training? most probably in Kedah

hmmm, Huang thinks Razif/Khoo are potentially more dangerous than current seniors Gan/Lin. This was after Razif/Khoo beat Luluk/Alvent. You guys have seen them playing, would know better in that sense. + Razif is Zakry's younger bro, wouldnt be surprised if Zakry pass some tips.
A pair to watch next year.

Razif, Khoo, Chan PS, Chan HP are 20 or 21. Same batch with TBH/Hoon TH. TBH/Hoon were the best of the crop and whisked off to senior squad, one half is now Msia's no 1 MD.

Razif/Khoo = World no 56
Chan/Chang = World no 61, one might be partnered with Hoon TH to replace CCM
Lim/Mak = World no 66

Lim/Mak are only 18, long way more to go. As I've posted earlier, high possibility Lim may be concentrated in XD like Tan Wee Kiong, at least till Beijing. Lim KW/Ng HL are World Junior Xd Champs. IN XD, these 2 young pairs will get a chance to go to OG.

How old are Bona/Ahsan? Couldnt find DOB when I searched their names

 

I think Bona Septano/Mohd Ahsan are both 20 this year. They are pretty much the next in line to be promoted to the main team. I think once Luluk/Alvent are disbanded (post Olympics), we will see Bona/Ahsan stepping up to be PBSI's no 3 pair (excluding Rian/Yoke and Rendra/Fran).

Lim Khim Wah/Mak Hee Chun are still very young...very good for Malaysia indeed. INA needs more blood in MD....so far only one in Wifqi Windarto/Afiat Yuris Wirawan.

 

KLRC have been great to give supports to some of the ex natonal players and they are given a chance to prove themselves. Some of the ex back up players are send for tournament and they are able to perform.

Heard Zulfardi have joined KLRC. Is it true? I heard he is only 14 years old.

Chong Wei and Hafiz praised for helping juniors


KUALA LUMPUR: Men’s singles shuttlers Lee Chong Wei and Mohd Hafiz Hashim may be busy with their own pursuits for individual glory in the Malaysian Open, which will begin from Jan 15-20 at the Putra Stadium in Bukit Jalil, but they have not forgotten the back-up players.

During a sparring session with the Project 2010-12 squad players, the two seniors gave it their all, earning glowing praise from the squad’s chief coach Rashid Sidek.

“I know that not every top player will want to go all out when they train with the back-up players. But Chong Wei and Hafiz went out of their way to help them,” said Rashid after a training session at the Juara Stadium in Bukit Kiara yesterday.

“Some seniors tend to hold back. They do not want to share their wealth of experience and skills with others.

“Although busy with their own preparation for the Malaysian Open, Chong Wei and Hafiz were committed in sparring with the back-up shuttlers. Chong Wei, especially, always gives his best regardless of the background of the back-up player.

“I must also thank Misbun (Sidek) for allowing his players to work closely with the back-up players. Sometimes, two or three of my players spar against Chong Wei or Hafiz. Sometimes, it is a one-on-one match play. This is really beneficial – at least it will narrow the gap.

“Misbun is also there occasionally to help out. I am happy with the working arrangement we have right now.”

Rashid hoped that the sparring sessions between the seniors and juniors every three to four times a week would help improve the standard of the back-up players.

By rubbing shoulders with the best in the country on a regular basis, Rashid expects better performances from his charges.

“They can learn a lot from these sparring sessions. I have raised the bar higher for them this year. I want them to reach at least the semi-finals of the higher ranked Open tournaments,” he said.

For the Malaysian Open, only a handful of Rashid’s players have qualified for the opening leg of the Super Series. They are Tan Chun Seang (men’s singles); Julia Wong and Anita Raj Kaur (women’s singles); Vountus Indra Mawan-Mohd Arif Abdul Latif and Chan Peng Soon-Chang Hun Pin (men’s doubles); and Amelia Anscelly-Sabrina Chong (women’s doubles).
Except for Julia, all the others will begin their campaign in the qualifying tournament

 

great that arif and lydia got selected..
hope they make full use of this chance given to them to bring their career to a higher spot..

 

I am still quite surprise with Arif inclusion in the Qualifying Squad, instead of the Monkey ..
