I just moved into 5500 106th Street Edmonton

which is South Edmonton so i'm told

my first Question is are there any places within Walking distance of my location

I dont have a car yet so i'm hoping there is something close by.

    I'd appreciate any help.

welcome to edmonton! there are lots of clubs here, but most are not within walking distance to you

probably the closest club to your location would be Southgate Badminton club, its at Strathcona school, 10450 72 ave. they play thursdays from 830-10. or if you are close to public transport, the U of A has a club friday nights at the Education gym from 7-10 PM.

check the EDBA site, www.edba.ab.ca, and go to the "clubs" link, there's a list of all the affiliated clubs in Edmonton.

    Good luck!

Derreck Golf and Winter Club is about 10 min from your house and it has a dedicated badminton gym. In edmonton the two competitive clubs would probably be the Derrick and Royal Glenora which is downtown in the river valley.

Depends on whether you wanna stick with feathers or plastic. Derrick club maybe the more affordable of the two private clubs that use feathers whereas EDBA clubs are plastics users.

IMO, The best EDBA club in the southside is IBC (International Badminton Club), they often have pretty strong players there. The downside being that their ceiling clearance is not too high so most players are pretty offensive minded and I think they're often packed with long waiting list for membership. The Southgate badminton club are often crowded and their courts are pretty dusty and old.

BTW, hope you can get a car soon (even if it's a cheap used one). Edmonton is an automobile city with its sprawling suburbs.

Does anyone know which clubs accepts drop ins? I've emailed Castledowns, Northgate and Fred's from the EDBA site looking to get some information, and no one has replied. I just want to play a little badminton while I'm here in edmonton. Otherwise, I'll have to spend my free time sitting on my ass at the casino.

Well, you may have to give up the sport then cuz only a few clubs use feathers. Derrick club in the south, Royal Glenora in central Edmonton and Red Willow in the north (St. Albert). If you use feathers with folks who play only plastic, you're gonna be using alot of shuttles for the same amount of games you played back East. The local climate is also not suited for feathers as it's very dry, so there will be more breakage without pre-game steaming.

if I can't find a club that plays plastic I will quit, this isn't the only sport I can play.

I thought people would play more seriously out here but mabye I was wrong.

Oh many of them do play seriously, it's just that they can't afford feathers.
