Both have met the qualification criteria but Singapore can field only one of them.

Singapore's top shuttlers, Ronald Susilo and Kendrick Lee Yen Hui are now vying for the single spot to represent Singapore in the Olympic Games. This is because of the rules set by the BWF, which is using its latest monthly world rankings to determine Olympic qualification. The top 38 players in the rankings will receive qualifying places for the singles events.

But for players ranked 17th and below, the BWF has stipulated that each country can send only one representative - thereby pitting Susilo against Lee.

Ronald Susilo is ranked 17th on this list and Kendrick Lee, 21st.

All eyes or now on the SBA, which will have to decide between the two men.

    The Straits Time read:
"Susilo, 28, has the experience and the pedigree, having defeated world No 1 Lin Dan en route to a quarter-final spot at the 2004 Athens Olympics. But the Indonesian-born shuttler has been plagued by an elbow injury, suffered at last year's SEA Games, which forced him to miss most of this season.

Lee, the emerging star of Singapore badminton, has never played in the Olympics before. Last year, the 23 year old won the Dutch Open and was the first Singaporean to reach the men's singles final at the Sea Games. Unfortunately, his recent form has been poor. He has failed to get past the round of 32 in his last five tournaments."

Jacqueline Lim, cheif of high performance and development within the SBA, had this to say: "Our main goal is to win a medal, so the player with the best chance of winning one will be selected."

The decision will be made based on the player's recent performances, fighting spirit and physical condition.

Factors such as a player's ranking, popularity and seniority will not be considered.

The final list of players will be sent to the BWF by May 31.

Said Lee: "It's good Singapore will have at least one representative in the men's singles. I hope whoever it is will go on and do Singapore proud."

    Your thoughts?

    Ronald Susilo or Kendrick lee?

    Guys,
As you guys might have read in the news, Singapore can only send one player, either ronald susilo or kendrick lee to play in the olympics. To just get a rough idea, lets see your votes. :)

I would go for ronald susilo. Based on the experiences that ronald susilo has, i think he has a better chance on playing better in the olympics. The olympics is not a normal tournament, its THE OLYMPICS! players more or less, will have more pressure in them. Ronald Susilo has proved himself to be worthy and steadier when playing against the big guns such as Wong Choon Han, Lindan etc. But for kendrick lee, when i saw him play in the semi finals against Taufik in the SEA games, he seem abit lost throughout the whole game, the confidence wasnt there.

So who do u think should have that place in the Olympics?:D

Yes, he is ranked higher. I think he is number 17th in the world while kendrick is ranked 21th in the world. But SBA is currently considering who to send.

I believe Kendrick will continue to improve but he is still at the stuttering stage, that means play well once ,then falter the next few times;the performance ratio does not favour him now.Plus he has not beaten many better skilled players; he needs much more match experience. It's premature to send Kendrick for OG08 experiment.
Ronald will always have a winning chance against any player (except CH in the past).Interestingly ,he seems to perform better on 'more coveted' tournaments like OG and even won the Japan Open once.Ronald has excellent skills although with no big weapon. But he can create his winning edge with craftiness. As he gears up for top fitness and full confidence, I wish him all the best for the future.

The players are still originated from mas.

Capello is not englishman, he is only an england national team coach. same as rexy. Rexy r not representing mas.

Thats how singapore usually do. If u r talented and cannot cari makan at your own country , u can simply fly to sg and get the sg nationality status and bcome a singaporean easily, like ronald did.:D

... yeah but why the double standards when it comes to the players only??

Correction, Rexy as the Msian doubles coach is representing Malaysia. Lets not build castles in the air, ok?

Singapore is no different than the US, UK, NZ, Canada, Australia. They will take in talents and I think that is the smart way to go. As for Malaysia, our politicians are in 'ketuanan' dreamland to know that the world is actually progressing. Thats why when you put Malaysia and Singapore side by side, you will see how far we have been left behind.

Being a "kiasu" country, it's very likely that SG will send the experienced Susilo instead of kendrick. 10 sticks of satays, any takers? :p

But then, I've heard from a few sources that Kendrick has beaten Ronald during training a few times already? And it seems that Kendrick is also fitter now as Ronald has been constantly attacked by injuries.

Jimbo, didn't Ronald give Lin Dan a run for his money in the recent ABC by pushing him to three sets?

Beating ur teamates in training doesnt mean u get the nods for priviliges. CJ and BCL also beat LD in training but when it comes to real tourney, it's a different ball game

The Viets, and many others stretched LD to rubber games but none of them has threatened LD. Susilo is over his prime and it takes sense to send Kendrick but I doubt SBA will take the risk... u know lah... in SG, if things went wrong (with wrong strategy), u will get scrutinized n critised.. normal lah in SG :p

It will be better to send Kendrick instead. I'm sure he will give his best. Ronald however is still doubtful since he has not proven himself after his injury. Sending him to OG08 would be a risk. However you will never know...Ronald might give us a surprise.
