2013 SUDIRMAN CUP : (day 8, 26th May) FINAL! China vs. Korea

On another note:

What is it with all these strict umpires that don't
allow a little breather or towelling between hard rallies. Their negativity really is bad for the viewers.

And holy smokes, there were more service faults called than in all the SS events combined up to date. Wth? Did everyone's ribs just drop 1 inch?

I noticed that, too.

Kudos to the CHN team for dominating, but tell me why this shouldn't be a yellow card?

After a run of points by the KOR team to be serving 19-20 (they were down 17-20), QZH purposely raise his left arm at the moment Ko was serving. After being warned by the umpire, he walked back, threw a knowing "see what I did there!" glance at his coach, smirked and did a mini fist-pump.

Where is the honour in this kind of cheap tactics?

And I'm quite sure a couple of times, he shouted and glared menacingly at the opposition when celebrating a point. Sorry... to me, he's the most undeserving of the winning team.

Yeah, I noticed that too and after the re-serve by KO which was too high and KOR lost that game.

I also noticed the looks.

I don't really agree with you. Kim Ha Na's a good player, yes, but if she insists on playing Women's Doubles in the mixed game, she'll keep losing to players who can play mixed (as will all the other female Koreans). And though the Indonesians are good, they're not really up there with the best because they lack the consistency and belief.

I'm hoping GC's announcement of a partner for LYD will procure a really good partnership, because the Danish pairings are probably past their best, and there aren't any other countries showing signs of hetero-awesomeness.

Indonesians XD is up there with CHINA. Ahmad/Natsir is 2 times All-England Champion. They have an upper hand against Zhao/Zhang and now Xu/Ma. Koreans XD can't beat Indonesians in many Super Series, and GP. Koreans XD is really not in the same level.

...
I have to say i would like to see a group of Korea, Den, Thailand, Ina where they play each. Way more interesting than to see how overall dominant China is.

I 100% agree that at the current strength as reflected in this Sudirman Cup, a group of four consisting of DEN, INA, KOR and THA will render much more equalized, more intense matches with widely opened, less predictable outcomes, therefore giving a very dynamic and thrilling spectacle in that atmosphere.

Ofc the draw has always to do with luck...
But I bet Ko/Lee would have beaten Cai/Fu with ease. Koreas MX pairings are very good, but there are three pairs (Xu/Ma, Zhao/Zhang, Ahmad/Natsir) who dominate this disciplin with quite a bit distance to the rest.
Korea team lacks in the MS, but Lee showed good performances if you consider these have been his first real tests.
I really hoped Korea could stretch China to the last match, but after the Indonesia sweat they upped their game...

Add Japan to that. One of the highlight this year was Den-Jpn match. That's why we need a QF draw after group matches so we could see such fierce competition among 2 already qualified teams.

But Denmark was lucky in the draw, luckier than Japan who in fact won against Denmark.

Congratulations to China on retaining the SC. Wasn't ever a doubt about it....

A big doff of the ol' cap to Korea for once again showing why they are the second most impressive national team in the world. Other teams are getting there as well - Thailand, Japan and Indonesia along with a now-depleted Denmark. But there is still daylight between ROW and China.

Always a big thrill for me to listen to Morten Frost, ably supported by GC.

Chen Long looks very comfortable as lead man in the ensemble now. Liu/Qiu showed glimpses of INA-like brilliance. Liu IMO was outstanding -his physical ability to stretch his lean but muscular body (note to GC: please review! :D ) when smashing resulted in some spectacular hits that left even LYD beached and appreciative.

Any single standout performance? For me, its a tie.
1. It would have to be LXR's masterclass against Indonesia's Lindaweni Fanetri.
2. Tago's superhuman (by any goofball's standards :D ) duel with JOJ.

Slight disappointment: KSH. He should have improved in consistency and tactical awareness by now but has not. Still plays like a young cub. Gets a B-minus in red from me. I wonder if 2Kim are not already on the way to being the best Korean MD team...

When asked about his team performance in this tournament, Korean head coach Lee Deuk Choon said, “I didn’t expect my team to come this far, but the players showed great commitment and this helped the Korean team achieve this. The young Chinese men’s doubles have improved a lot this year. Our pair lost to them at the Indian Open too.

“Overall we need to improve. We are okay in the doubles categories but we are in trouble in the men’s singles. China is the best team. We have a lot of catching up to do,” concluded Lee.

China’s head coach Li Yongbo was in a joyful mood after the trophy presentation and when asked how he felt about his team performance, he said “It’s not easy to win 5 times in a row, but all credit to our players and coaches that have sacrificed a lot to the team and we are pleased to win this tournament again. We are pleased to see a lot of countries such as Thailand and Chinese Taipei have improved and we hope other countries will follow suit and challenge us in the future, it is good for badminton to have more countries to challenge for the top honors in badminton.
...
On his team’s domination in the world of badminton, Li said, “We sacrificed a lot to be at this level. We deserve every medal and championship that we have won. I hope other countries will work harder to stop us, but we won’t give up our titles so easily.
....
Finally, when asked whether he would help out to make badminton more competitive in other countries, he replied with a smile, “I’m always happy to help, but I’m only the Chinese head coach. I’m not working for the BWF. They have so many capable people in their team, they wouldn’t listen to me.”"

Well said the CHN team has truly worked hard over the years and deserve this. ROW needs a lot more catching up to do as a combination. Individually fr the ROW there are teams almost in all disciplines that can challenge CHN bu not when they combine...

CHN v INA part 2 is the most thrilling clash during this Sudirman Cup, too bad both teams didn't meet in finale...

Congrats to CHN team, winner of Sudirman Cup 5 times in a row since 2005, 9th title overall, tremendous achievement!

I would say that China vs Indonesia was the 2nd most thrilling clash, after Denmark vs Japan.

But as far as the most thrilling match goes - the Xu Chen/Ma Jin vs Lilyana Natsir/Tontowi Ahmad would be the most heart-stopping.

It is indeed too bad that the INA vs CHN clash was not at the final stage - I could have done with more pics of Head Coach Li Yongbo fidgeting in his seat ......

"Last week, [Kenny Goh of BAM] hinted Malaysia may not bid for any of BWF’s major events – Thomas Cup, Uber Cup, Sudirman Cup and World Championships as the new commercial model for these events do not favour hosts, with BWF earning 80 per cent of the commercial revenue."

It is interesting and surprising !!!
And what are the BWF officials going to spend the huge percentage of $$$?

will be interesting to see if no major badminton nation would like to host all the affected events as the consequence... let a less significant country host them, thus with smaller cakes to share... ha ha 80% of less bites :D i somehow sense a new height of $$$ thirst at the helm

Badminton lacks star players like Tennis do....so what good can $$$ do for BWF?????? If badminton have star players that is recognisable all over the world...then nations may want to host big events...
