I thought bronze was assured when they reached the SF as in the last edition?

JS dreamt of being an Olympian like his granduncle. And once he set his sights on his target there was no going back and he persuaded his parents, May and Colin, to send him to US to develop his potential at age 14 and thereafter to the University of Texas, which has an excellent swimming program, before he finally won the Olympic 100m Fly gold at age 21.

His journey and that of his parents who have to divide their time to accompany him in US when JS was a junior, have been tough both financially and mentally. It seems the Schoolings have to mortgage their house to raise the money and now both parents are in their sixties.

The government and the sports fraternity did help JS financially and in other ways when he trained and studied in the US. There are various schemes to help our talented athletes and in JS's case, he was given a deferment from his military (National Service) obligation to pursue his dreams.

Our Parliament yesterday made it a point to acknowledge and congratulate Joseph Schooling's historic Olympic gold medal contribution and he was given another deferment till after the Tokyo Olympics 2020 so that he can continue to create history for Singapore sports.

Indeed he will get his million dollars and I'm sure other sports-loving corporations and individuals will join hands to make more contributions.

Is this the same for all 5 disciplines? A playoff for bronze?

Which is more than what the Malaysians would get ....... only around USD250,000 plus USD 1,250 lifetime monthly pension.

Oh, forgot to mention, pairs have to share. So each person will get half.

Less share if you are a football team.
Oh, forgot to mention, including subs.

Akane Yamaguchi (Japan) vs Nozomi Okuhara (Japan) in woman singles quarterfinals? Anyone knows why this is happening? This is Olympics where players are representing own nations. Shouldn't the players be separated in top and bottom half of the draw. This is practically reaping of one potential metals from Japan. I thought after last Olympics where match fixing happen, BWF has put some measures. It is so silly...

Probably because it goes some way to ensure the long term case for Badminton in the Olympics. It would have been very unhealthy for the sport to see another Chinese Olympic sweep.

Hi, congratz to Malaysia and Indonesia for making the XD final! I haven't read through the thread, but what were the excuses this time for China losing? They saving their energy for Tokyo 2020 right? Hehe. Amazing though, didn't see that coming - neither of China XD in the final! And LCW might not even be needed to get Malaysia's first Gold!

But I would say China surprised with both their MDs in the semis.

To be honest, I'm never surprised to see any China in any badminton semis. Now seeing Malaysia in a badminton major final? That's surprising. And XD to boot.

Do you read the post before you? The excuse is there. Li Yong Bo saves the whole badminton cause for Olympic by losing in XD Semi Final. I hope he will also instruct the rests of his team to give away their match. It would be a delightful Olympic without China in Final.
