2026 Smaller Tournaments discussion

European Junior Championships this week.

This tournament is a prelude to the World Junior Championships in Egypt in October. We should be looking at the semi finalists and perhaps some of the quarterfinalists to get an indication of the potential of which Europeans might do well in Cairo.

Im keeping an eye on Xiaoyin (Olivia) Liang in WS. She is just 14 but became Swedish senior champion earlier this year, convincingly beating all our established players. She’s also won some European U17 tournaments.

Probably still too inexperienced to go very far here but definitely a talent for the future.

I agree with you. She's got good rhythm in her footwork. Like most juniors, trying to play too perfect at times which results in a lost point. I wonder how bad is the drift in the stadium. She nearly beat the Belgium 13th seed.
 
She moves well, yes. Unfortunate she couldn’t clinch the third game. It was close.

3 - Denmark
1 - Spain
1 - Germany
1 - Ukraine
1 - Switzerland
1 - Belgium

So France seems to be here to stay. 3/4 spots in MS alone.

France and Turkey have monopolised mixed doubles. Each country has two pairs in the semifinals
 
Mady Sow is a special talent. Still only 16.

Excellent racket skills and angles on the attack but maybe lacking slightly on the power still. Would benefit going forward from learning what Viktor did to become a physically dominant player at that height.

One for the future for sure.

The line judge in the ladies singles bottom right of the TV is a complete joke. I’m watching the third set of the ladies singles and he’s judging the back line of the Danish player. … well, trying to judge.

In the end the titles went to France (MS), Ukraine (WS), Denmark (MD), Turkey (WD and XD).

Great result for Turkey. Some disappointment for France with so many chances. Nice to see Ukraine on top of the podium.

Turned on to watch WD match in Pontianak IC which is my hometown. Really like Aulia/Lidia. Will be interesting if they can be the future good WD from INA. Has such a good posture. I dont know why Sheila Lidia didnt play with Veren Daula. Of course , i am more confident if she is of Chinese descent.
 
Pontianak IC XD SF has Lin Sheng Min and Sun Liang Ching. These two came third in AJC (Lin was champion in MD). This pair really look strong

She turned 15 this April. (Born.in April 2011). Not yet.16. She was the one I was talking about. She dominates domestic circuit. U17, U19, seniors. Reaching.even semis and finals of Senior ranking tournaments domestically. She may reach Top 75 or Top 50 this year in BWF ranking.

Saw her for the first time 3 years back. Was very impressed back then. Saw clips of her matches, she grew taller than I expected lol and her height is nice for her age, footwork a lot better, selection of shots and lack of UE and most importantly confidence in the shots and overall play- in one word Awesome.

Also props to PBSI for organizing this IC event. Feels like they are hosting super 300 or 500 plus tournament in terms of lighting and environment of the arena.

Last week, I saw Singapore international challenge organized even better. They had review system for line call. Would you believe it?. Manual review for line calls. I saw people using that system. A guy manually checks slow motion replay video to check the line call. Wow. For International Challenge level tournament, this is crazy.
 
It will be the Asia U17/U15 championships in two weeks. Ip Sum Yau is seed first, Tanvi Patri second. Currently .

I don’t know the players very well but I expect Nathida Buramat and Shaina Manimuthu to put up stiff challenges.

It's a worse system than Hawkeye.

For effects, it's nice. The overall delays and errors made by this system are worse than the ones with Hawkeye.

There were plenty of feedback on this system. Even some players also challenged it.

If it's a system tested to replace Hawkeye, then I'm not in favour of it.
