3x45 Point System: How Does It Work?

Before discussing pros and cons I could really try to understand how do you achieve the said 45 points in a set?

Say, one side won 3 games and the other 2, what does happen then? Start another round until you get 5 games?

I understand losing points are being discarded, right? Since they say 9-8 is the same as 9-0? Then why do you even call it "45" by points if not all points counted?

Really puzzling thing this, what say you? ;)
