GBR Start Well in World University Badminton Singles

After a dissapointing team display GBR have regrouped and have shown some good form in the opening rounds of the single matches at the World University Badminton Championships in Wuhan, China.

The Mixed Doubles pairing of Hayley Connor (Bath) and Robert Adcock (Sheffield Hallam) proved too strong for the Host nations representatives of Wei-Jue and Pan Pan progressing with a 22:20 and 21:19 two set victory. Great Britain's other Mixed Doubles pairing of Robin Middleton (Loughborough) and Jenny Day (Loughborough) struggled in their first game going down 21:13 and 21:18 to the Poland pairing.

In Men's Doubles event Robert Adcock and Robin Middleton destroyed the Canadian pairing of Trudel & Lemay 21:4 and 21:10.

The Women's Doubles pairing of Rachel Howard (Bath) and Jenny Day (Loughborough) didn't fair as well as the men going down 21:12, 21:18 to a strong Indonesian team.

In the singles competition Eleanor Cox (Open University) started brightly by defeating Emaya (Indonesia) 21:18, 21:14 but lost in her next match 17:21, 21:16 and 21:11 in an evenly fought contest agaisnt Despierres of France. Her compatriot didnt fair much better as Rachel Howard lost to Goto of Japan 21:17 and 21:11

The Men's singles could prove the gold mine for the GBR team as Rajiv Ouseph (Loughborough) continued his briliant form brushing aside the Russian Visser 21:9, 21:4

It will be interesting to see how the GBR team fair in their next rounds and to keep upto date with all the action over the weekend please click here

Team GBR have lost their opening two matches against Japan and Hosts PR China at the World University Badminton Championships.

Only Rajiv Ouseph (Loughborough) has won a rubber beating Japan's Tomoya Inoue 12-21, 21-19, 21-9. Great Britain went on to lose the opening match against Japan 4-1. Worse was yet to come with GBR losing their second group match 5-0 to hosts, and favourites, China. Great Britain therefore finish bottom of their group and do not progress any further in the Team Competition.

The only way is up for Great Britain and it is hoped the singles tournament will bring success for the delegation. Rajiv Ouseph (seeded 3/4 in the draw) receives a bye in the first round of the men's singles and will face either Visser (Russia) or Niroshana (Sri Lanka) in the last sixteen.

The Women's tournament will see both Eleanor Cox (Open University) and Rachel Howard (Bath) competing for GBR. Eleanor Cox starts her challenge against Dwi Pralasari Emaya (Indonesia) while Rachel Howard will hope to avenge her compatriots, Eleanor Cox's, defeat in the team match (16-21, 11-21) when she meets Japan's Mai Goto.
