Please download this clip first! http://www.mediafire.com/?ayw4cwzzcno How did he do that? Is it the combination of wrist, power, footwork, angle, timing, grip-handling, good anticipation? even BCL didn't expect it to be cross-court and deep to the corner. From where he stood, he expected the return to be straight down the line or net drop or maybe half or 2/3 of the court but turned out to be cross-court backhand clear (or drive?). I want to hear your analysis from technical point of view on how he (TH) is able to do that. hopefully this would be a good discussion and same time to improve/correct our techniques, etc. No bashing or teasing please!!!
Wow, it happens so fast, and from the clip, it really is quite difficult to see how he does it. I'm guessing that he was calm, he had good footwork, and a very strong arm & wrist. All this, and a very well-practiced backhand. Taufik is quite famous for it, but this is one more of his surprising shots. Bao is thrown way off balance, didn't stand a chance, so surprised he was.
Wow, combi of great footwork, wrist, timing and all other factors were wad made it possible. It was really fast, I would not hav seen it if I blinked my eyes at the wrong moment.
Bao's shot was a good length short-not more than 2/3 of the court-and Taufik needed only two steps back to cross it with a half smash. It was not an extreme backcourt backhand shot. It was taken well short of the back doubles service line. Taufik's shot simply shows he knows how to punish a poor return. There are better examples of Taufik's backhand.
the point won by TH is more from the error of BCL than TH extraordinary backhand. BCL should be in ready position at the court center or only slightly to the right hand side. Both bcl and TH gambled on their choice. BCL commited to a wrong bet.
Exactly, it was a good backhand by Taufik, but the shuttle ended up near the mid-court area anyways, if Bao was in the center, it would've been an easy kill to him, but he took the position to the right and was caught off guard. In any case, the Olympic 2004 match Taufik vs Peter Gade has almost the same shot, but it's sent further back
