From Badminton NZ's website
Auckland International - day 1
It was not a good night for Australian James Paybody, ranked 303 he was beaten in the first round by young Asher Richardson (16) from Canterbury. This was a good win for Richardson, ranked 548 who earlier this year won the June Bevan under 17 boys singles title. Paybody then continued his bad run as he and his partner Spoorti Rattan, seeded 3/4 lost the first round of the mixed doubles to the New Zealand pairing of Michael Fowke and Susannah Leydon-Davis both from Waikato.
Waikato teenager Bjorn Seguin will play his first match of the tournament on day two and is aiming to push his unbeaten run in New Zealand to five consecutive events after titles at the North Harbour Open, New Zealand U23 tournament, North Island Championships and Counties Manukau Open. Other top seeds still to get on court are fellow Kiwis Joe Wu, Dean Nuttall and James Eunson from Southland.
Women’s singles top seed, Indonesian Rosaria Pungkasari at 53 in the world and second seed is Kristina Ludikova(Czech Republic) ranked at 62 will also play their first match on Thursday.
Seeded Kiwis Rachel Hindley and Michelle Chan both won their first round matches in straight games but Southland’s Anna Rankin was beaten by Indonesia Ana Rovita 21-13 21-14.
Good achievement by Asher Richardson - although I had never heard of james Paybody. Paybody's mixed doubles partner Spoorti Rattan was also beaten in the first round by Clare Chapple - Rattan is on the Austalian National Squad.
Pics from day 1
^^Those overhead shots..^^
..just curious, were you perched high above the courts??.. I assume they have some sort of scaffolding directly above the courts??..Ceiling must be high, i assume??..
Btw, thanks for capturing and sharing the pics!
Wow! Heaps of photos! I'm not going to go through & identify everyone but the first shott was Michael Fowke. The second shot was Michael Fowke vs Reon McFarlane. The last shot on the first page was tournament controller Yve Rodgers.
ctjcad you are correct - there is a higher level where the main meeting room is, and court one is just over side Pity that they do not have the same thing across all the courts, as I like the angle.
No pics from day 2, busy looking after the sick
Thanks for the photos, Jim!
Photos of Gifar and Riyanto from noluckjim....
Riyanto after the match
Too bad there aren't any shots of Riyanto playing
Gifar in action... [what action is this?!?!?]
Cannot really see his face here huh?
..i see. Looking at some of the pics, they seem to be taken @ directly high above the court. Can you possibly go down from that fabulous viewing location and take a picture of the meeting room? If just to see the relationship with the court. Thanks.
All of PB Djarum boys and girls are through the QF. They will face some tricky matches today, esp in the Singles. INA might take 3 out of 4 places in XD SF, 2 in WD SF as well as MD SF.
Didit/Yayu beat the top-seed in XD yesterday; while Jenna/Oliv and Yayu/Delis beat the fourth and the second-seed in WD respectively
I think Delis Yuliana is injured/sick, that's why two matches involving her were walkovers. Only Didit Juang Indiarto/Yayu Rahayu lost today. The rest of the Djarum players all won their matches!
INA can still sweep the Auckland titles...
Bjorn Seguin lost to 15-year-old Gifar 16-21, 17-21...
James Eunson [3/4] will take on unseeded 16-year-old Riyanto tomorrow...
Top seeded MD Michael Fowke-Bjorn Seguin lost to Ullin-Berry 9-21, 13-21 in 25 minutes...
INA lost 2 XD today, but still have their best XD, Ullin-Jenna in the fray... There is still a chance that INA might sweep the 5 titles in Auckland...
Any more photos from day 2 or 3?
John Moody is retired, I think he's now working in Sydney, as he recently took part in a local tourney...
Thanks cannot smash. It would be nice if BNZ ever posted a tribute to these guys after they retire. Even Dan Shirley didn't get one - & he is our best player in recent times & such a nice guy!
Sigh - I thought Bjorn would be our best chance at this tournament.
James Eunson is young too. 19 I think.
Krisna noluckjim wasn'r able to go to the tournament on day 2. Hopefully he got there yesterday.
Ok, then today will be a battle of teenagers... Hope it will be a good game...
Well James lost but Joe Wu won against the other Indonesian guy. I'm pleased for Joe. He is one of the nicest guys you could ever meet.
Michelle Chan & Rachel Hindley are through in the womens doubles too. Yay! Its always a bit sad if there are no local players in the final of their countries tournament.
Yes, Riyanto defeated James Euson [3/4] 21-13, 21-15... Febby Angguni also won against Kristina Ludikova in 70 minutes... 21-16, 28-30 , 21-10!
So, WS title is 100% in INA's hands... Too bad with Ullin-Jenna's rubber set defeat, XD title is no longer a possibility for INA.
