    Praneeth shocked at Singapore Open
    The New Paper

Sai Praneeth, the men's singles defending champion of the Singapore Badminton Open, was at a loss for words after a shock 16-21, 21-16, 21-18 defeat by Japan's Yu Igarashi in the first round of this year's tournament yesterday.

The 25-year-old Indian shuttler, ranked 28th in the world, had led 11-8, then 14-12, in the third set against Igarashi, but the 59th-ranked Japanese rallied to post a remarkable victory at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.
"I don't know," the sixth seed mumbled, when asked what contributed to his early exit. "I was maybe under pressure. I was low on confidence."

Meanwhile, Singapore shuttler Loh Kean Yew flew the Republic's flag high when he became just the third local shuttler after Ronald Susilo (2008) and Derek Wong (2014) to reach the last 16 of the Singapore Open.

The world No. 176 defeated No. 39 Lucas Corvee of France 21-15, 21-16 in just 38 minutes.

The 21-year-old national serviceman will play South Korea's eighth seed Lee Hyun Il for a spot in the quarter-finals this afternoon.

Singapore's representative in the women's singles competition, Yeo Jia Min, also progressed into the last 16 after she beat Thailand's Porntip Buranaprasertsuk 21-12, 24-22. Yeo faces China's Cai Yanyan today. - SAZALI ABDUL AZIZ

Look at the way be comprehended his match against KM. A honest introspection of his game in that match. He underlines how much one needs to be ‘involved’ - both mentally and physically when you play against someone of KM’s caliber. I don’t think SK would be able to introspect anything like this on his defeats.

I think most people have simply forgotten about Sai because of Sindhu's gold.
But he has repeated Prakash Padukone's feat after 36 years. He deserves a lot of credit.

I want to congratulate Sai for his tremendous achievement.

I think for sure he will be 1 of the 2 Indian players to reach Tokyo.(Unless injured).
The question is who will be the 2nd player?

    Would you believe it?.
He is the only one indian who has beaten all the world champions & medallists and olympics champions & medallists atleast once in his life time. Taufik hidayat, Chen Long, Lindan, Lee chong wei , Victor Axelsen , Kento Momota etc.

I can't even believe it. But it is the fact. He is so underrated.

Praneeth in a media interaction ahead of PBL had some things to say. Taken from newspaper "The Hindu".

" 2019 was a good news for me other than (just) badminton. I played consistently well. Reaching the Swiss Open final in March really changed things for me at the beginning of the year. "

On Olympic qualification- " Four months still remain. Everyone is fighting for the spot. There is a very big competition. I want to confirm my berth as soon as possible. "

On Momota (now these are some interesting comments) - " The one year ban (in 2016) made him strong and that helped him so much. He trained very hard (during the time). But my sixth sense says Momota will lose in the Olympics , but we can never say for sure. Because he has won everything- The Super Series, BWF super 1000, 750 and 500. There might be extra pressure on him at Tokyo. "

On BWF calendar - " At some point, it becomes difficult. We can't play that many tournaments but we have no choice. Unless the BWF makes a change, we can't do anything about it. "

Personally, I think he shouldn't have made these comments about Momota.

But other 5 senses sing a different song ;).

I think he has a habit of saying premature statements. AfterWC'19 some Telugu media interviewed BSP and PVS together. Some guy asked PVS what tips would she give BSP so that he can beat KM, Even before PVS replied to that BSP grabbed the mike and said "I know what to to for KM, I have a strategy for him" and in the very next meeting KM squeezed BSP like a stress ball I think in Denmark open 2k19, After game1 coach Park had to say "Okay training is done, now lets begin the match ;) "

It's become a habit now. KS and HSP also said similar things in mid 2018 when they played against KM. Actions speak louder than words.
