This continental event is practically warm-up for real competition in upcoming Thomas & Uber Cup Finals, most of strong teams only send B squad to give exposure for their youngsters instead of revealing true strength. The exceptional case is men's team defending champion Indonesia that register first-layered players to create hat-trick, a prelude campaign to bring back Thomas Cup, last time lifted the prestigious trophy was 2002. Last edition runner-up China fields weak line-up here, led by Lu Guangzu as first singles while Japan only misses Kento Momota, Kamura/Sonoda.

Japan and Korea will be strong contender to win Asian Women's Team champion, China rests world number ones, Chen Yufei and Chen QC/Jia YF. Ratchanok Intanon also excluded in Thailand roster, seeded 3/4 of this event.

Host Denmark, China (Thomas Cup holder) and Japan (Uber Cup holder) automatically will be qualified for May event as the BWF regulation stated below : https://extranet.bwfbadminton.com/d...Major Events Tournament Regulations Table.pdf

Indonesian bring their best men's team, with this team, they even can take Thomas Cup this year. I think they will win this ATC cup this time.

In women's team, Korea and Japan can play the final match if they will not face in semi-final.

Thailand can surprize everyone by going to semi-final.

China and HK may be barred from Asia Team meet
    https://www.thestar.com.my/sport/ba...hk-may-be-barred-from-asia-team-meet#cxrecs_s
PETALING JAYA: The status of next week’s Asia Team Champion-ships in Manila, the Philippines, is in quandary as two badminton nations – China and Hong Kong – may not get to compete.

The Philippines government have temporarily barred non-Filipino travellers arriving from mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau to their country as preventive measures to contain the coronavirus from spreading.

The Asia badminton meet, which starts on Tuesday, serves as the qualifiers for the Thomas-Uber Cup Finals from May 19-24 in Aarhus, Denmark.

The team qualifiers also offer valuable ranking points for Olympic hopefuls.

The Badminton World Federation (BWF) have stated that they were not stopping players from China to compete in any tournaments abroad but they are unable to stop countries from making a stand on the matter.

It’s learnt that Badminton Asia (BA) are appealing to the Philippines government to allow the shuttlers from the two nations to compete in Manila.

If the appeal is rejected, the Asia qualifiers will lose its glitter as China are the Thomas Cup defending champions and last year’s Uber Cup runners-up.

And the organisers may have to conduct a redraw.

I think it is official. All players from China and Hong Kong will be barred from entering the Philippines, ... with far-reaching implications.

That's why it is said, not without reason, that fear of the virus, scaremongering, panic, and overreaction are worse than the virus itself. Sigh.

Mass Hysteria should be avoided or prevented at all cost. It's the most dangerous threat.

    By the way,

China is not sending their top players anyway. Look like they don't care about this tournament.

China do care. The younger players need the experience of playing top players from other countries.

Speaking of caring, after the Philippine government made their travel ban announcement, the BWF made a statement. Since then, HKBA? CBA? Philippine BA? Badminton Asia? SCMP got a quote from the HKG coach but total silence otherwise, until the BAI announced the women's team withdrawal.

Because they have secured Thomas & Uber Cup Finals ticket, pratically this BATC event main intention to give exposure for their young and upcoming players.

I think there are chances AE can be cancelled too. I dont think UK embassies in China are ready to give Visa to China travellers either that or be banned.

There are quite a chance for community outbreak in UK, if not Birmingham.

The Badminton Asia Team Championship shows that even in the absence of China players, the tournament still goes ahead.

With present circumstances, there is no reason to cancel the All England just because China players might not be able to enter. If other players don't want to play in the All England (or any other tournament), then they can withdraw.

Ironically, the reason why the Indian Women's team withdrew has been removed....

Virus takes shine off Asia badminton meet
    https://www.nst.com.my/sports/badminton/2020/02/563883/virus-takes-shine-asia-badminton-meet

    By K.M. Boopathy - February 9, 2020 @ 10:21am

DUE to the travel ban imposed on several East Asian countries by the Philippines, badminton powerhouse China and Hong Kong, no thanks to the Wuhan coronavirus outbreak, have withdrawn from the Asia Team Championships in Manila.

The tournament not only offers Olympic ranking points, but is also a qualifier for the Thomas Cup and Uber Cup Finals.

However, China will still qualify for both tournaments as among the three highest-ranked teams in the world.

The Philippines government imposed the travel restrictions after a 44-year-old man died from the virus in Manila last week. The country has recorded three coronavirus cases so far.

China and Hong Kong’s forced withdrawal were confirmed by a Badminton Asia official yesterday.

“It is confirmed. China and Hong Kong will not be competing in the Asia Team Championships. A re-draw will be conducted at the team managers’ meeting on Monday (tomorrow),” said the official.
