TheStar June 27 06 PETALING JAYA: National shuttler Mohd Roslin Hashim has taken up the offer to play and coach for a badminton club in Denmark for six months beginning in September. Nusa Mahsuri's secretary Raja Azmi Raja Sulaiman, the wife of former doubles ace Jalani Sidek, confirmed yesterday that Roslin has agreed to a six-month playing and coaching career with the Vendsyssyl Badminton Club (VEB). “The contract starts from September 2006 till April 1 next year. The deal was finalised on Friday,” she said. The 30-year-old Roslin, the elder brother to former All-England champion Mohd Hafiz Hashim, will play alongside the VEB's recent recruit and former world champion Peter Rasmussen. In the presence of Rasmussen and Roslin, VEB is expected to pose a threat to other leading clubs in the Danish Badminton League, which are currently dominated by the current top players in the world – Peter Gade-Christensen and Kenneth Jonassen. Besides playing and coaching for the club, Roslin has also been given the nod to compete in four Open tournaments – this year's Japan and China Opens in November and next year's Swiss Open and All-England in March – under the club's expenses. Last year, Roslin was not considered in the country's elite programme under the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) banner due to his poor performances. But the former world number one player did not give up playing. This year, his best showing is a runner-up finish at the Philippines Open and a quarter-final finish in the recent Malaysian Open in Kuching. Raja Azmi was happy that the professional outfit (Nusa Mahsuri) was able to strike a good deal for Roslin, who is determined to revive his badminton career. “We had several discussions with VEB. They want to engage Roslin for six months. “The clubs in Denmark are allowed to hire two foreigners,” said Raja Azmi yesterday. “Despite the six months contract with the club, Roslin can play in Open tournaments as a player representing Malaysia. “They have agreed to bear the cost for Roslin for four Open tournaments during his stint with the club. They also allow him to compete in other Open tournaments but Nusa will take care of the expenses. “During his stay there, the club will provide him with food, lodging and a car. “His job is to help the club achieve good results in their league and Inter-club tournaments. He is also obligated to coach the club's juniors,” she added. On top of all the benefits, Raja Azmi said that the VEB had agreed to pay Nusa Mahsuri a sum of Euro 27,500 (RM127,684) for allowing Roslin to play for the club. “It is now Nusa's discretion to pay Roslin's salary accordingly. But this deal is certainly a boost for Nusa,” she added. Currently, Roslin is ranked 67th in the world. Some of his notable achievements include 2001 Swiss Open and Japan Open titles; 2003 All-England semi-finalist and the men's singles winner at the 2001 Kuala Lumpur SEA Games.
