World Juniors Set for Relay Scoring Debut

In its 20th edition, the BWF World Junior Mixed Team Championships for the Suhandinata Cup in Nanchang is set to witness a revolutionary change in the scoring system.

The team relay scoring system that will be used for the championships (30 September to 5 October 2024) offers greater opportunities for upcoming badminton nations to challenge traditional powerhouses. Since its debut in 1990, the Suhandinata Cup has been won by only four countries – China, Korea, Malaysia and Indonesia.

While the draw at the World Junior Mixed Team Championships 2024 consists of a group stage followed by a final stage that will determine overall ranking of teams, each tie consists of 10 matches (two matches each of men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s doubles and mixed doubles) played for 110 points.

Here are the main features of the relay scoring system:

    • The first match will be played to 11 points (change of ends at 6 points).
    • The second match will start at the score of the first match and continue from that score, however with the losing player/pair of the first match having a minimum of 5 points or the actual number of points scored, whichever is higher.
    • Every subsequent match will be played for the next 11 points from the score of the previous match. The trailing player/pair will start with their actual number of points, or a minimum of a multiple of 5 (5 for the first match, 10 for the second match, 15 for the third match and so on), whichever is higher.
    • Thus, the second match will play until one of the players/pairs reach 22 points (change of ends at 17). The third match will start at the score of the second match and continue from that score; however, with the trailing player/pair having a minimum of 10 points or the actual number of points, whichever is higher.
    • The ninth match will play until one of the players/pairs reach 99 points (change of ends at 94).
    • The 10th and final match will start at the score of the ninth match and continue from that score, with the trailing player/pair of the ninth having a minimum of 45 points or the actual number of points, whichever is higher.
    • The 10th match will play until one of the players/pairs reaches 110 points and thereby wins the tie (change of ends at 105).
    • No player shall play in more than four matches.
    • In case the same player is playing two consecutive matches, they shall not be allowed any additional rest.
Before the team tie starts, a draw will be made between the team managers who will choose the first match to be played.

    • The first five matches of the tie must contest one of each of the disciplines (i.e. MS, WS, MD, WD, and XD).
    • The winner of the draw will choose the first and third matches.
    • The opposing team will choose the second and fourth matches.
    • The match not having been chosen will be played fifth.
    • The last five matches (matches six to 10) follow the same order as the first five matches already determined.

Looks interesting. I got completely lost the first time of reading the scoring system. Definitely something worth trying

    Interesting seeding info from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2024_BWF_World_Junior_Championships_–_Teams_event

Did not expect Thailand to be the second seed, above Malaysia, Indonesia, Japan, Chinese Taipei, India, South Korea, or Denmark.
Also, UAE as the seventh seeded country is a big surprise!

The seedings for teams competing in the tournament were released on July 16, 2024. It was based on aggregated points from the best players in the BWF World Junior Ranking.

    Group 1 (Seeded 1-8)

Found out from BWF Junior Ranking from July 16. 2024 ranking https://bwf.tournamentsoftware.com/ranking/ranking.aspx?id=41203
Make sense that UAE is the 7th seeded.

    Bharath LATHEESH = 3rd rank Men's single
Dhiren AYYAPPAN + Dev Ayyappan = 11th rank Men's Double
Taabia KHAN = 13th rank + Mysha Omer KHAN (20th rank) Women's Double
Taabia KHAN = 7th rank Mixed Double

Latheesh is highly ranked and he’s a very powerful player. He doesn’t have those fine skills from what I can see.

I like this system, allowing upcoming nations to challenge traditional powerhouses.

What happened if the last player is injured or not performing well?
Let say country A vs. country B. Until the 9th matches, country A has won all the matches with overall score of 99 (A) vs. 45 (B).
However, in the last match, country B player is so dominant that the score is now 105 (A) vs 110 (B). Country B wins.

Usually, BWF comes up with these kind of changes @ Suhandinata cup. But this time, I never expected to be this way. Even though it feel like unique way of scoring, my attraction towards the game is completely missing. This is just my opinion guys. Within just 5 minutes, match is over and other pair/individual starts entering the court.
Do they want players to not get injured!. I felt it that way. Usually, in juniors, same player used to play both singles and doubles and the work rate will become so high . After that unfortunate death incident, I always felt something need to be changed in the game rules. This rule sounds unique but whether it makes people watch it eagerly?. For me.. No.

USA lead a charmed tournament. They beat Philippines by just two points yesterday. Today, they have beaten Thailand by three points.

The other notable result today was Chinese Taipei edging France by only five points. We would have expected the margin to be bigger.

Interestingly, this system indeed allowing the lower level team to edge pass fancied top teams. USA has proven it. If something like this did not happen, I would definitely go against this rule considering the complex scoring and lack of attraction. Now, let's see how it goes tomorrow in the knock out stage

Ella Lin (USA) delivers. USA team placed her on 9th match and she turned the whole games around. She beat Philippine (9th match) by the score of 28-10 and she beat Thailand (9th match) by the score of 14-6.

Ella Lin has a bright future for USA badminton in WS (https://olympics.com/en/news/badminton-2023-bwf-world-junior-championships-junior-star-profiles)

PS: To be fair, Thailand junior team was without its best WS player, Pitchamon Opatniputh (17 years old, 2023 World Junior Champion in WS).

She beat ketlieng who has a good record. Ketlieng is two years younger though. Ketlieng can be a bit of a slow starter at times.

Hardly any of the individual matches last ten minutes.

From a viewers perspective, it’s hard to settle into a game. Players have it worse.

    =========
    It happened!

Netherlands- New Zealand is a reverse turnaround by the 10th match.
    https://bwf.tournamentsoftware.com/...121CC0A-C846-4624-BE9D-43ED5CAB285D&match=282

Entering the 10th match, Netherlands has won all 9 matches. 9-0. The overall score was 99-94 (Netherlands vs. New Zealand)
But New Zealand took the lead at the last match.
The final score was 109-110 (Netherlands vs. New Zealand, no deuce).

Even though Netherland won the game numbers (9-1), but New Zealand won the match when it reached 110 point first.

France beat Korea. If anybody is wondering how, Korea didn't send their top juniors due to a domestic tournament.

Does anyone find Korean decision making a bit bizarre?

What a thriller, the match between USA and India. USA was leading until the last match. They were always 6 points ahead. The last 2 matches made that for India. Especially , last MD match.
They took 15 points from 95 to 110 whereas USA took only 3 points from 99 to 101.

Just imagine playing at senior level against spain team and their last player is Marin...

But that isn't easy either. The arrangement is such that the last game is the one not decided. So if playing against spain team, the opponent will put WS as 6th or 7th game.

It is a good strategy of India team manager to make sure the US team strong players were played early. India team also has a more balanced players. And, of course that last India MD pairs played superbly.
