What do you mean by "extension"? Is it completely shutting down, or is it going to sleep?

You should try putting a different hard drive in, if you have one. It might be a defective hd. How much RAM do you have installed?

What brand is the RAM? You could possibly have a failing module of RAM. You're running XP, right?

Download Memtest86+, burn it to a CD, and reboot with the burned CD in the computer. If there is an error, test each module of RAM by itself to see which one has the error, or both.

    Testing individual components...

It is indeed very tricky as you will need a spare of every bit that may be the cause and try and narrow it down. Components you will need to test are RAM, HD, PSU, motherboard and CPU. Either you have these spares or borrow it from someone to test yourself. The PC repairer should be able to identify exactly what is wrong as I would presume he has all the spares. Normally I would not try fixing these types of problem myself as its too time consuming and also I don't necessary got all the spares. I would take it to a competant PC repairer.
When PC behaves this oddly it is normally not OS related, it would be more likely hardware related.
Believe me I have poke my head under the PC hood quite a few times. I am getting too old to do this now, time being precious and badminton is more important to me now than PC's, which was one of my hobby's.
A basic PC box are so cheap these days anyway its just not worth the trouble of trouble shooting and trying to fix it yourself. You may save a few bucks but you cannot go upgrading or fixing you PC indefinately.
If you can describe what specs is your PC I can give you a rough idea what your best option is...., ie. upgrate parts, OS or buy a new PC.

Did he go through the things other BC members have suggested (especially opening the case and checking for dusty PSU (power supply), fans & CPU heat sinks) prior to him recommending a new extension? Did he charge you for his diagnose?

... it would almost seems you need to find a new "computer shop". :D

In the odd-chance it may be an extension/power-bar related issue...

    - Do you have large electrical devices (refrigerator, copier, air-conditioner, etc) plugged into the same extension/power-bar/wall-outlet?
    - Do you experience frequent flickering of lights (especially when those appliances activate or when your neighbour's refrigerator turns on)?

Then you may need an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) with some line conditioning to prevent brown-outs.

    Cheers!

it is always the right move, send it to the specialist.
dont try to be funny and send the pc R.I.P

as for the extension chord, pay extra and get the good one.
    minimum requirement "SIRIM Approved".
