Feedback & Discussion on Chinese Shuttlecock Brands – Start Import/Export ?

Out of interest, how does it work with paying import tax and customs duties when ordering through Alibaba directly?
It depends on the type of Incoterm you use. If you take the DDP incoterm, the seller takes care of everything right up to delivery to your door. In this case, for small deliveries, shipping costs are quite high, especially as you're obliged to use air freight ~$3 usd per tube for Shuanglang so, for example, I ordered 4 tubes SL1/4/5/7 at 23.5/12/14/13 usd + $12 shipping => 75.5 usd. For larger orders and shipments by boat, we go down to ~$60 usd for 50 tubes (~0.83usd per tube). I still don't understand how they manage to integrate taxes such as VAT (20% in France), but the fact that everything is cleared through customs and in order without a hitch... You must have a vat number to be exempt from vat on purchase, otherwise you'll pay the 20% directly on alibaba.

edit : ~$60 usd for 50 tubes (1.2 usd per tube)

So I bit the bullet and placed a first test order with Kunli as well. Ordered the following shuttles:

Kunli Bronze:

KL-03:

Honkoo 4:

Honkoo 2:

Finger crossed that everything goes smoothly with shipping and import clearance.

Did you paid the XX% VAT directly on alibaba ? Personally, I really like kunli's customer service :D He's a nice guy from what I've seen so far ! How much shipping cost did you pay? Let me know if the honkoo are okay !!

So far no extra VAT. Yeah, customer service is excellent, Faith is answering in realtime until deep into Chinese time evening. And shipping plus import fees for 4 tubes were a hefty 30 USD - which overall still adds up to cheaper prices than midrange shuttles ordered locally.

Guys, I would not recommend to order duck feather shuttles because of it's durability. We tried LIng-mei 30, 40 & 50 models - durability is much lower than 20 & 60 models (goose)

I paid 25 usd for 5 tubes, ouch :/
I have already requested and for maritime delivery, for 50 tubes it is 60$ of DDP delivery. What do you usually order locally?

The durability depends above all on the quality of the feather and quite little on the species in the end.Poor quality goose feathers are not worth duck cigu duck feathers. For a club like mine with beginners and intermediate players people do not spend more than 20€ per tube it is almost impossible to buy good goose feather shuttles. Currently the club has RSL DTL 82 and their durability is ridiculous (15 points on average, 1 set at most). With Kunli-05 and Shuangluang SL05 that I just tested tonight it's more like 2 sets. For the Ling Mei I wouldn't be able to give notice because they do not accept sample orders.

References will be:
Victor Service (34 EUR currently)
Fly Turnier (29 EUR)
Forza S-6000 (25 EUR)

The Forzas are not that bad tbh. Biggest issue is that our heavy hitters manage to break off whole feathers rather quickly.

I think it's my "problem" to properly evaluate the shuttlecocks, I only have a regional level and I don't have a national level player available. (the coach is too busy to do it)For 34€ it is possible to have lingmei validated bwf it seems very expensive to me.

When I mean heavy hitters, I’m also talking about advanced regional level players. One of them has a pretty powerful smash and he’s using it all the time, and he eats the Forzas like popcorn.

Got an update on my shipment btw:

Last time I’ve received a pre-shipping picture was from RKEP Eric (legend!). So this is definitely Champions league level customer support.

3 layers cork cannot be compared with 100% like AS30-50 and Li-Ning G700-G900
especially for the hard hitters
Models of snowpeak are similar with the Aeroplane

Am I talking nonsense if I think that 99% of badminton players are unable to tell the difference between a shuttlecock with a 3-layer cork head and a shuttlecock with 100% natural cork head ? Of course professionals will be able to feel it, but I don't necessarily see the point for amateur players (amateurs in the non-professional sense) to have the best possible shuttlecocks when they're going to be doing a misshit 50% of the time 🤣 Btw the same could be said of all the accessories needed for badminton (shoes, rackets, strings...) My club's coach, who was top 60 in France less than 10 years ago, didn't even know that our club's shuttlecocks were made of duck feathers and not goose feathers 🤣

speaking of the aeroplane brand, I haven't managed to get in touch with them ! I've heard great things about them and the durability of their shuttlecocks :)

The Kunlis are quite yellow‘ish, the Honkoos bright white. First shuttle from the KL-3 tube already had a broken feather.

Since summer is really kicking in now, it might be a while until I will have tested them all. So don’t hold your breath.

ah yes it's bad luck on the KL-3, personally they've always been good quality for me. But yes, air delivery is very fast. I'm impatient to get your opinion on the Honkoo because I haven't ordered any, I don't know what's different about them as they come from the same factory in the end, I was afraid it was just a rebranding.

Just a quick feedback after 3 sessions:

KL-3: No... just no... bad flight, bad durability... I'd easily prefer hybrid shuttles to these. Directly donated the rest of the tube to the club for kids' practise.

KL-Bronze: Better, but still not in a range that is significantly better than hybrids you get at the same price locally. Flight is okay, durability was mixed. Again, direct donation to the club kids.

HKO-4: nice shuttles overall. Stable flight and consistent durability. They match the overall performance of the Forza S-6000 imo.

HKO-2: Great shuttles. Playing those after testing the others makes you realise why high class natural feather shuttles are so much fun to play. Those are clearly comparable to AS30 imo. If I was seriously going to order a bigger bulk of any of these shuttles, the HKO-2 would be my first choice. Looking at the prices, it's around 21 USD before shipping and import tax, so I guess I would end up at around 23 EUR when ordered in reasonable amounts. Not the super steal that we might have hoped for, but still a good bang for the buck value imo. So we will think about ordering more of those for the club and maybe add some tubes of HKO-3 to test.

Overall summary of this test: You get what you pay for.

I have tested the new Victor NCS shuttles in parallel and frankly, those were the overall winners for us. Flight and hitting feel on the level of the HKO-4 and a consistent durability of 2-4 games. ~19 EUR ordered locally. Unbeatable.
In my very personal opinion, those synthetic shuttles are the future for casual play, club practise and lower level tournaments. If I imagine the current NCS with added fine tuning and further developments in material, they will make natural shuttles obsolete pretty quickly.

AS30s are sold at 40€, HK2s imported in boxes of 50 tubes can come back all-inclusive with the current eurusd exchange rate at less than 22€, I call that a steal xD
I agree that synthetic shuttlecocks are the future of the sport - they have to be ! For a more sustainable future !

Cool tip I found while using the NCS, if you experience the shuttle slowing down bend the tip of 2 opposite feathers inwards, if it’s still slow tip every 4 feathers.
