are you sure that it is the transformer and not the rectifier tube? when the 12AY7 are not present, there is almost no current drawn by the system. so presence of hiss when 12AY7 present points to the fact that the sound is due to presence of load to the system. from my experience, transformers tends to hum (lower tone) than hiss (higher tone). if it is a hum instead of a hiss, then it may mean the transformer was poorly wound and thus vibrates under load...
kwun: I might have not the correct word to describe the sound. Let me reconfirm to you later on. But our conclusion is almost yours: "poorly wound and thus vibrates under load". We are a bit puzzle somehow, because it is a new one. We have an idea: put a 12 volts and supply the current to the 12ay7, thus release the loading of the transformer (however, size of a 12 volts is a problem to house in the compartment) (for information: after 30 hour run in, we feel the sound more mature)
hmmm, this is a pure two channel sound system; it cant decode or play a dvd ie. no picture on tv (but you can imagine the pictures when playing an ordinary music cd, though) Would that disappoint you ?
if u were referring to that chain store. that's what i found from the internet:- HMV stands for His Master's Voice which is the slogan that was used with the painting of a dog ("Nipper") listening to the horn of a gramophone (originally painted with a cylinder phonograph, then modified to a disc machine) - in the US the same image was used by RCA Victor.
I got a HMV old type phonograp (留聲機) in a trading fair. Before I am interested in Hi Fi, I really just viewed it is a copy cat of Victor equipment. After studied some materials, oh my god!!! I got a master piece equipment. But do the two dogs of HMV and Victor come from the same story?? Owner dead and wait........ and dead??
nope. coz at the beginning i was too lazy and only want u to tell me the answer! however, i wanna ruin the fun again. . so i went to yahoo then type "hmv nipper". that's only the fourth search and it took me about 20 sec.
Finally Finally, we get rid of the annoying sound that generates from the transformer. Before we have this solution, we have tried another transformer, but annoying sound still emits. Then, we put on a smaller transformer on top of the original one. This smaller transformer's job is only to light up the pair of the 12AY7 tubes. It works, no more annoying sound is generated from the transformer(s). Psychologically, I feel the musical sound more "thicker" and more quiet background than before... just psychologically
