Second-Tier Shuttlers to Carry the Weight at Sudirman Cup

With the absence of senior players representing Indonesia at this month’s Sudirman Cup in Kuala Lumpur, younger players will be forced to lead the country’s team to victory.

Many senior players are missing from both the men’s and women’s rosters. Sony Dwi Kuncoro and Simon Santoso, the world no. 4 and no. 14 players, did not qualify for the squad announced by the Indonesian Badminton Association (PBSI) earlier this week. Sony is still recovering from a recurrent back injury, while Simon has been performing poorly.

As a result, Tommy Sugiarto and Dionysius Hayom Rumbaka are on the men’s roster, though they are usually listed as backup players.
“It’s true that it’s Tommy and Hayom’s first time competing without the assistance of senior players, but they are no longer second-tier shuttlers.

“Since the senior members of the team are not able to represent Indonesia at this year’s event, they must carry the responsibility,” Rexy Mainaky, the head of the PBSI’s athlete’s development, said during a simulation test for the Cup team at the national badminton camp in Cipayung on Wednesday.

Additionally, the women’s team will be missing Adrianti Firdasari (29) and Maria Febe Kusumastuti (51), as both have not been playing up to their usual abilities.
“Firda is still recovering from a leg injury. She is still below 70 percent, and there is no way for us to send her to the championship. We decided to count on three others because their progress is promising,” Rexy said.

The three players are Linda Wenifanetri (15), Aprilia Yuswandari (23) and Bellaetrix Manuputty (34).
Hayom said he plans on seizing this opportunity.

“The absence of our seniors will more or less bring influence to the team. But we will take the opportunity as a challenge to show our capacity as national players,” the world no. 26 said.

Injuries have also hampered the country’s doubles teams. Men’s doubles specialist Mohammad Ahsan, who has a back injury, and women’s doubles player Anneke Feinya Agustin, who is suffering from a knee issue, are both still recovering.

Ahsan, however, will still join the squad.

“He is getting much better, and we will bring him to Kuala Lumpur while Feinya will remain in rehab,” Rexy said.

Feinya will be replaced by Greysia Polii, who will team up with Nitya Krishinda Maheswari, Feinya’s current partner.

The three other slots will be filled by Meiliana Jauhari, Gebby Ristiani Imawan and Tiara Rosalia Nuraidah.

Ahsan and partner Hendra Setiawan will lead the men’s doubles team, while Rian Agung Saputra and Angga Pratama will also compete.

All England champions Tontowi Ahmad and Liliyana Natsir will lead Indonesia’s mixed doubles team. The PBSI will also send Muhammad Rijal, Debby Susanto and Fran Kurniawan Teng.

As current China's WS coach is Tang Xian Hu and he will be head to head with current INA's WS coach Liang Chiu Sia. Both are legends and it would be interesting to see both of the coaches face each other. :)

Greys (Polii) inclusion is good for the team. She lends stability to her partner, and her form seems to be pretty good lately.

Sorry, actually I meant to mention Vita Marlissa (and not Polii). Too bad, Vita is not in the team.

As Saina is injured, indonesian team has a chance to take that point (WS) more likely. Sindhu is very young. If she carries full weight, she may feel the pressure which i think will create different result.

    According to me, Sindhu vs Linda ---> 48 - 52 %

I feel that the Jakarta Globe shouldn't be using the the second tier shuttlers tagline. Bring some confidence to the team in general by presenting a better headline page.

With the exception of some notable INA private players like Pia and her pretty partner Rizky, this is the best squad Indonesia has - and frankly I can't say if the inclusion of Sony, Simon, Firda etc would make the team better. Some of the younger players have stepped up to the plate in recent competitions.

    PBSI is smart :D

during players' bidding in January, they expressly declared to reserve all rights of sponsorship to Thomas / Uber / Sudirman / Axiata.

Therefore, all players are free to wear the sponsor's jersey / apparel, save during these 4 championship.

I have to disagree at bold part. Without Sony, INA MS chance of delivering point against IND is 50-50. Same also if INA to face JPN, THA, DEN or KOR. Inclusion of Sony may not be significant only if INA to face CHN or MAS MS.

INA will face CHN in QF. anything can happen, eventhough it is very hard to beat CHN.

remember on how Towi/Butet and Linda beat Zhang/Zhao and Wang Yihan in straight sets recently..

    MD could also deliver points..

just do the best whatever the outcome will be.
