Ririn and Lukhi can’t get enough winning
Agnes Winarti, The Jakarta Post, Jakarta | Sat, 07/23/2011 11:26 AM

Hoping to prove to their parents that they won’t be trapped in the flash-in-the-pan, star teen syndrome, recent Asian junior badminton champions Ririn Amelia and Lukhi Apri Nugroho are determined to satisfy their hunger for victories in coming tournaments.

“I believe that status as a champion only lasts for the time when we’re standing at the podium. Once we leave the podium, we are starting all over again from zero,” Ririn, recently told The Jakarta Post after returning from Lucknow, India, with her mixed doubles partner, Lukhi, as the 2011 Asian junior gold medalists.

With that attitude she learned from her trainers at the Djarum badminton club, Ririn, who turns 18 in December, said she kept pushing herself to get better.

The competition among my peers at the club is very tough. If I want to keep moving forward, I realize I can’t just leave it to the coaches. I have to initiate my own training every Sunday to fix my defects,” Ririn said, who moved to Jakarta from her hometown Padang in 2009, despite her parents’ reluctance.

Since high school, Ririn has known her heart was in badminton, despite being at the top of her class, academically. Though she completed high school this year, she recalled once threatening her parents with leaving school for badminton.

My parents’ doubt of whether or not I can succeed in badminton has driven me to keep proving that I really can,” Ririn said. She is the only daughter among three children. Her father, Kamaruddin, is a driver for cement company PT Semen Padang and her mother, Yenny, is a housewife.

Since 2008, she kept a long list of triumphs in numerous national tournaments, including the most recently at this year’s national circuits in Palangkaraya, Bengkulu, Jakarta and Bandung, as well as reaching final 16 at the recent Djarum Indonesia Open Super Series Premier in Jakarta.

From their most recent triumphs at the Badminton Asia Youth U-19 Championships in India, Ririn and Lukhi were awarded Rp 40 million (US$4,680) bonus from their club, Djarum.

Just like his partner, 18-year-old Lukhi, who came from Surakarta, Central Java, to Jakarta last year, also regards his parents as his main drive to be the world’s number one shuttler someday.

“My parents had to ask for a bank loan and sell the family car to pay the expensive fee to my previous club in Surakarta so that I could move to the Jakarta-based Djarum club. Thanks to their great efforts, I can reach this stage. They are my spirit and I won’t waste that,” said Lukhi, the first born of four children, whose parents run a furniture shop.

This year, two young Indonesian pairs ruled at the Asian junior championships, as Tiara Rosalia Nuraidah and Suci Rizki Andini also won the girls’ doubles gold. These young pairs will face more tests at the BWF Junior World Championships in Tao Yuan city, Taiwan, held from Oct. 28 to Nov. 6.

Indonesia’s mixed doubles queen, Liliyana Natsir, who partnered with Markis Kido in their younger days, won the Asian junior championship in 2002. In 2009, in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, the Asian junior gold medals were also won by the then-boys’ doubles pair Angga Pratama and Rendy Sugiarto.

Over the years, the championships have been the birthplaces of the current world-class shuttlers, not only Liliyana and Kido, but also singles shuttlers Lin Dan and Wang Yihan of China, and other top doubles Lee Yong-dae of South Korea and Koo Kean Kiat of Malaysia.

Separately, the Indonesian Badminton Association’s (PBSI) head of athletic development, Hadi Nazri, recently outlined a plan to hold national selection to welcome more young doubles shuttlers to join the national camp. The coaches are currently still focusing on the top shuttlers’ preparations for the upcoming BWF World Championship in London. After that tournament, we will have time for the selection,” he said.

Congratulation to Suci Rizki Andini/Della Destiara Haris for winning the Indonesia International Challenge 2011 title, this will be a wonderful month for Suci Rizki Andini especially, winning Asian Junior Championship 2011 in the earlier of this month with Tiara Rosalia Nuraidah, and today she grab the Indonesia International Challenge 2011 title with her regular partner Della Destiara Haris. By winning this INA IC 2011, it will boost Suci/Della confidence to play in World Championship 2011. Well done for this young girls... :)

It's all INA MD in SF. Eventually, young pair from Djarum Kevin Sanjaya/Lukhi Apri Nugroho entering final after beat Lee Wan Wah/Chang Chong Ming in QF, and beat young pair from pelatnas Ricky/Ulin. They will face another pelatnas pair Marcus/Agri in final. I can say future of INA MD is so bright! :)

Vito (Shesar Hiren Rhustavito, right?) is a good seed. Can see that he still has much works to groom himself, but he has good materials. Am too looking forward to seeing him getting more mature and showing real things in bigger tourneys :) I also like Yohanes Rendy Sugiarto, the calm, charming, tall dude. But I dont know if he can still push it far with Afiat. I'd put my bet on Angga Pratama/Ryan Agung Saputra. Saw them playing on INA SS last June, and since then I've put my hope on them. Great materials, only need to sow more experiences.

I'm excited too to see how the youngsters have been showing "something" to the world in Asian Junior Champ and Vietnam GP 2011. I am now more interested to keep my eyes on them rather than seeing the "old guns". Kinda thrilled to see who will make into Pelatnas this time.
